I have been re-reading the HP series (just finished POA), and it occured to me that Harry's darkest moments in each novel are NOT the moments where he must face LV. As readers, WE look forward to the climactic moments where Harry must once again face off vs. Voldemort, but these are not the darkest moments in the storyline for Harry; not from HIS point of view. I think the fact that Harry's bogart changes into a dementor instead of LV proves my point about this.
His darkest moment in SS is difficult to pinpoint, but here is my thought. From Harry's point of view, it was so exciting to see his parents and family in the Mirror of Erised that it became an unhealthy "addiction" for him, and like all unhealthy addictions, very difficult to give up. It had to feel like he was losing his parents all over again. I think his experiences with the mirror, while good at first, became Harry's darkest moment in this novel because it reminded him so starkly of his loss. In CoS, the real terror for Harry was the possibility of losing Ginny and seeing her so near death. (There were many frightening moments, but have you ever noticed that Harry handles the scary moments really well? They rarely affect him for long.) In PoA, Harry is given the gift of a godparent who wants Harry to live with him only to have that gift taken away soon after. More loss. In GoF, the darkest moment is Cedric's death and having to get back to the tournament grounds with his body. Again, Harry faces loss. Harry has many dark moments in OotP; it is a dark book, but his final loss of Sirius tops them all. And we end in HBP with the loss of Albus Dumbledore, probably the biggest loss Harry has had to face so far, with the exception of his parents. Which finally leads to my two main questions... 1) If, from Harry's point of view, his darkest moments have all involved the loss of someone precious to him, what event do you think will prove to be Harry's darkest moment in DH? If this pattern of loss continues, who will he lose? 2) Do you think, in the end, that Harry will simply be "the boy who lived", or will he have finally earned the right to be "the boy who lived happily ever after"?
