In chapter 19 (The silver Doe) of DH Ron unexpectedly returns to Harry and Hermione after a prolonged absence (they believed that he was gone for good). The difference between Harry's and Hermione's respective reaction to this is striking.
  1. Are the reactions of Harry and Hermione in character?
  2. Are their reactions realistic/believable?
  3. Why are the reactions so different?

Thanks,
- Acrux

I think that hermione's reaction was one of a person being left by someone she was in love with.
Harry was just happy to have ron back on his side

This sounds very much like a question on and assignment or an exam! I do think the reactions are in character though, Harry has just been saved from drowning so of course he reacts positively to Ron, and Hermione's reaction is in character also, remember the birds!

I thought their reactions were very funny...or at least Hermione's was....but I agree with others when they say it was their characters reaction....Harry was glad his friend was back and that he saved him...and even though Hermione was happy that he was back...she was extremely hurt that he had left when they were supposed to stay together and help each other....so this was the end result - beatup.gif ....hahaha

I think the reactions were perfect. Obviously harry and ron are guys, they were upset, but after a few months that would just blow over. Then ron saving harry upon his return only made it better. Plus harry was glad to get ron and his help back.

But hermoine having such strong romantic feelings for ron, it's not gonna just be ok. She felt abandoned. Plus there has always been that tension between them because they never told each other how they actually feel. When ron left, harry was mad and hermoine was hurt and sad so the reactions reflected that perfectly.

I always had the impression Harry was one who could quite easily forgive. Especially when it came to Ron. It was the same after their GoF fallout, when Harry immediately was okay again, happy to have Ron back and didnīt even need to hear an apology.

In DH, the situation was a bit more serious, but nonetheless Harry was so glad to have Ron back. And Ron had just 'kind of made up for it' by saving his life and retrieving the sword. And Harry witnessed the locket-vision, so he saw what had bothered Ron so much that it led to him leaving.

Hermione didnīt know all of this. She had no idea how useless Ron had felt and how much he had worried she might prefer Harry. She was heartbroken when Ron left, maybe a bit scared for him and she might have thought she would never see him again. So she let her hurt and frustration out in a big blow when Ron came back. And Hermione generally can be a bit unforgiving. She needs a bit longer to come to terms with things.

All in all I found both reactions to be IC. And they are so different because of their characters and because in the case of Hermione matters of the heart were affected.

I think that Harry and Hermione were both in character. Harry never can stay mad at someone for long. Hermione on the other hand holds grudges. I f there was anything out of character it was that she for gave him within three days.

I couldn't have said it better myself...and this from a fellow Ron fangirl to boot! smile.gif

I don't know that I agree with the initial poster's assertion that Harry and Hermione believed they'd never see Ron again. I'm pretty sure both of them were holding out some kind of hope for his return. It's not mentioned in the text that they felt that way, but after all those years of knowing each other so intimately, I simply can't imagine they'd just resign themselves to his permanent absence.

Their reactions were very in character...Hermione must have truly felt a sense of betrayal and desertion when Ron left, especially knowing that he'd heard her calling for him before he Disapparated and left anyway. That's got to sting! I didn't begrudge her a moment of her beating him up and going crazy - I wouldn't have expected any less of her!

Harry saw the Locketcrux's vision...if he didn't understand and forgive Ron after that, he wouldn't have been the Harry we know so well.

Because of their protective charms, they did not believe that Ron would ever be able to return to them even if he wanted to. So yes, they must have thought that he was gone for the duration of the horcrux hunt.

I think if Ron had saved Hermione's life the way he did Harry's she might have forgiven him that night as well.
