What would you like as the "perfect" book release event?, What ambiance, what frivolity would add the finishing touch to the lon |

Greetings folks!
I am new here am finding everything so wonderful Some of the things we have done are: For our first book release event we created a "sorting hat" (with a walkie talkie hidden within it - the other walkie talkie being held by my English husband smile.gif who watched from a hidden position near our display) which sorted any interested shoppers into their house. It was wonderful, and children and adults took part! We had also made up stickie name badges with the four houses on them, which (naturally) we gave to anyone who was sorted. Susan (my co-worker smile.gif) and I dressed the part of witches and had a display table with chalkboard hailing info on the training of dragons, miscellaneous books, witchy decorations and some dry ice for effects. It was a great success and great fun. The last event we did was for the movie, and for this one we again dressed up, and added a stuffed owl with a message and some nice decorations to our display this time and I had spark paper in a ring so I could have fireballs(albeit tiny ones) from my hands. We had the (mostly kids) do a test (halloween standby of spooky feeling into a bag where there are spooky feeling everyday items) and the ones who successfully identified the "eye" (without looking) got a gold (chocolate) egg. Anyone not brave enough got another colour chocolate egg(so no one really "lost"). I was wondering what you or perhaps your children would find to be that remembered "perfect touch" to the long awaited Harry Potter book (or movie) release? With a smile, DreamQuestin |

If I were going to go to a release party, I think my favorite possible activities would be trivia contests. You may want to have different age brackets and several games (or at least prizes for all participants as you did with the bag and the objects). You can be assured that all of the Ravenclaws at least will have a blast. Hope that helped a little!

the ideal for me would be a quiet book shop (i might even go to sainsburys again cos there were about 6 of us lol) followed by going home, to a pint of milk and my reading chair and starting to read and telling DH to go to bed and i'll be up when im falling asleep...
but he has been pre-warned that my main focus the week following the release is going to be to read the book (except for certain exceptions of course - food, drink, toilet and sex) -------------------- |

The walkie talkie idea is great. We went to a book release party for HBP at a small shop in central NY State while on vacation. They had a "sorting" as well, but when you put the hat on, it was simply a matter of drawing your house from a cauldron. (my youngest daughter wasn't too thrilled with being a Hufflepuff. "Better Hufflepuff than stinking Slytherin" though.)
There is a section on Mugglenet and a link for one here (Potter Parties) that has a number of Harry Potter recipes that look quite promising. Some are quite simple to make, others a bit more work. (the licorice wands are brilliant) Since food is such a huge part of the books, I figure when we have a Harry party this year, lots of decadent treats will be key. I've already made two versions of "Butterbeer", the alcoholic and non-alcoholic. I'm going to try some "licorice wands" and "cockroach clusters" this weekend. Some fun ideas here. I went to a midnight release (not to buy the book because I did that the following morning) with my daughter and granddaughter for HBP. The event was at a local mall, and some of the stores stayed open for the people. The event was mostly geared to really young kids--coloring and cutting witch hats, tasting Bertie Botts All Flavor Beans, etc. There wasn't enough going on to keep people entertained until midnight. And realistically, I don't know how many really little kids would be kept up that late. I don't think it was very successful, so I'm not sure they would do it again for DH.
I would love to see some trivia type events. I imagine a Jeopardy type contest (or a college bowl). You could do all kinds of categories. Some contests could be about spells, others about quotes--who said this?, or events in the books. I think it would be fun to be sorted not just into houses but into alliances. Even though Jo has confirmed that DD is dead, there are many out there who still cling to hope that he will come back. There's also the whole issue of Snape's loyalty. And wouldn't want to forget the shipper--R/Hr or H/Hr. This post has been edited by Seven of Nine: Feb 18 2007, 01:02 PM -------------------- "That's why he fought. That's why he lived again, and that was the answer to Tam's question. I fight because last time, I failed. I fight because I want to fix what I did wrong. I want to do it right this time" -- Rand |

The sorting hat sounds GREAT. have you thought about a treasure hunt? i always loved them when i was younger, and it appeals to a large range of ages. you can also make it as large or small as you want depending on the size of your venue.

Here's my idea of the perfect book release event:
At a large bookstore, there's activites, depending on your age. This includes trivia contests, a walkie talkie sorting hat, and coloring sheets for the younger kids. Also, there's food and drink. Some examples are pumpkin juice, butterbeer, Chocolate Frogs, and Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans. When midnight comes, no one is allowed to shout out a spoiler. You would get your book and go home. I can't wait for July 21... |

Whenever teachers aren't in school and we weren't given work to do (or even sometimes when we are), there's a game we play that could easily be HP themed. You'd definitely need name tags.
You need something like 15 people or more. Someone has to pick a theme. Here, you'd want things like Hogwarts students, spells, magical creatures etc...Everyone sits in a circle and writes down something on a slip of paper that falls into the category. Someone who isn't playing reads through the slips of paper with no repeats. The idea is to guess who wrote down what. Someone starts the guessing. If they guess wrong, the person they guessed gets a turn. If they guessed right, that person is on their team and they get to talk together and guess again. In one version of playing, if the captain of a team is guessed, everyone is on the team of the person who guessed them. In another version, you have to remember what everyone on that team wrote down. The game ends whenever everyone is on the same team and the winner is the team captain. -------------------- "Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?" ![]() Thanks for the use of the Garden image tanyal33! |
