I haven't started listening yet, but it sounds like they tackle "Hair-gate." I really wish Melissa was on the show, because I would love to hear what she has to say about all of the "H***" comments this week, especially when she commented a few times herself.

Posted by: danae24 Jun 25 2006, 09:55 PM

Yay!!!! new Pottercast, and on time!!!!

but I guess it will be kind of weird to think that Melissa isnt on this PC... but she deserves a major break.... 44 Pottercasts + (yes, a plus...) leakymugs, Fittin' it in's and Totally Lost..... plus her normal job.... it was bound to miss one.

I was really sad that there was no Melissa. And there are no females in the mailbag! Andrew+Ben+John=somewhat crazy discussion

Posted by: Dillon-K Jun 25 2006, 11:15 PM

Yay! MC and PC are guesting each other's podcasts again! And yes, John, I get the RENT reference.

EDIT: Dude, there was no canon conundrums which means my voicemail wasn't heard... lol.

Posted by: HermyG13 Jun 25 2006, 11:20 PM

I can only imagine how bizarre this week's Pottercast is going to be... ponder.gif
I'm gonna miss Canon Conundrums, Steve, and Melissa!!

Posted by: michpotter Jun 25 2006, 11:31 PM

The Drums just aren't the same without Melissa.
Sue, you deserve a medal for putting up with those boys.

Great show, too funny, but it needs Melissa sarcasm and humor......

You know, I've heard almost every episode of PotterCast, but I've never laughed as hard as I did in this one, though I did miss Melissa.

Anyway, just finished the episode and I knew I had to pop in here a second and support John on that Rent reference. ;) You ROX my SOX John, and I think you need to get Sue and Andrew to see Rent while you're in Vegas.

Posted by: Pinjo Jun 26 2006, 02:16 AM

I was a little dissapointed to hear that there was no Melissa in this Podcast, but she deserves a week off after all the work she has done for us. At first I was unsure about this, I unsubscribed from Mugglecast because I kind of found their banter a little immature in comparison to Pottercast, but I figured I would give it a chance. It was well worth it, they are a very entertaining bunch. I guess I was just being up myself when I unsubscribed, and I think I will give Mugglecast another chance! smile.gif
Great job guys!

Posted by: Perhenwen Jun 26 2006, 02:49 AM

I subscribe through iTunes and I haven't got the episode yet. It doesn't seem to be on the site. Has anyone else had any problems downloading it?

Posted by: Sofie Jun 26 2006, 06:09 AM

great show, guys though i missed Melissa....and Steve....and Kristin

i really liked the ModCast and when they started counting the soulparts of Voldy (1/32th doh.gif ) i was like, oh no, please dont to maths. and then Jason said exactly what i was thinking: Jo is quite bad at maths, too so there is no way Voldy split his sould this way smile.gif

i liked Lori's "caughSnapecaugh" tongue.gif

i enjoyed the fan - interview. its high time peolple realize that there are HP fans outside the US and the UK. it must be cool to have a character from your counrty in the books, but im not complaining, we Hungarians have the Horntail wink.gif

Sue as a DE? ROTFL

Posted by: LinZabeth Jun 26 2006, 09:43 AM

Having no Melissa and no Canon Conundrums, but Melissa and Steve deserve a break. Still, this PotterCast made me laugh a *lot*... Sue as a Death Eater -- Sure... lol.gif

And, I got the Rent refernece.

Posted by: Wizardmom Jun 26 2006, 09:57 AM

aaahhh...no Melissa or Steve, but hey, everyone deserves a break now and then!

I will say though, this week was probably one of my favorites off all time. John and the MC boys were fantastic this week, I laughed so hard.

Sue, a Death Eater?? I hope not, can Hufflepuffs be Death Eaters?

The modcast this week was terrific. I think Voldy planned all along about having 7 parts of his soul, so he might have known to pour only 1/7th into each horcrux. Who knows.....Jo knows.

Looking forward to CC coming back, hopefully next week??

Posted by: Karyn Jun 26 2006, 10:22 AM

This Pottercast was awesome, even though I really did miss Melissa.

It was good to hear from the Muggleboys again (even though I still can't tell them apart) and to hear a more serious John, though I wouldn't want him to be serious all the time. I enjoy his jokes. And the Rent reference made me laugh so much.... I started to hum Bohemia when I heard it!

And Sue as a Death Eater... well.....

Great job guys!!! clap.gif

This was a great episode. I love it when PC and MC appear on each other's podcasts. Although, I really did miss Melissa. And what was with having no women in the mailbag! It was still funny though! I missed the fan response and Canon Conundrums, yet the fan interview was really cool. Hopefully Melissa and Steve will be back next week to continue CC. Still a very awesome show as usual.

I haven't finished the episode yet, but If the 11 year old who called in is on the board, I want to give you some advice.

Kid's are mean, especially during the Junior High School age. In fact, that was the worst time of my life. Most kids make fun of other kids because they feel insecure about something in their lives. This doesn't stop when we become adults either; we simply get better at denying it. I bet many of these kids, especially if they are your age, read Harry Potter or play "kiddie" games, but are too scared to say it out loud. A lot of kids at that age are really confused. I know I was. You're not a teenager yet, but you're not a little kid. It sounds like these kids are trying really hard to prove they're not "little" anymore, so they pick on you for reading a "kids book," when we all know it's not just for kids.

So, first of all, be proud that you have the guts to support something you love. Millions of people, not just kids, love these books. Celebrities and world leaders read Harry Potter. Take the last episode for example: Adults use the books as a business model!

Also, be happy that this is the best thing they can come up with to make fun of you. You could be mean or cruel. The only thing these dorks can come up with is Harry Potter.

The best way to get them off your back is to show them it doesn't bother you. They pick on you to get a rise out of you. They want you to fight back and make a scene. They next time someone calls you a "Harry poopy face," just say, "Yeah, I read Harry Potter, so what." DOn't fight with them, don't call them names back. They're the ones that look stupid for saying "poopy face."

I can't promise that they'll stop. But as long as you know reading HP isn't a bad thing, then don't let it get to you. I know it's easier said than done.

Posted by: mollywobbles23 Jun 26 2006, 10:50 AM

Great show, though I missed Melissa. I got the RENT reference too and I laughed. I missed CC, but there is always next week! The fan interview was very interesting; I liked the discussion about the differences that she saw between Harry readers and non-Harry readers.

Posted by: broadwaystar32 Jun 26 2006, 12:12 PM

Some of my thoughts:

As for the hair, I think all the guys needed a haircut after the 4th movie- they were getting a bit scruffy. Ron and Harry look good; Neville's haircut is a bit horrid. However, I think the aim is to keep him in character. He's a dork, so give him a dorky hair style. Otherwise he was getting too darned good looking.

I've always imagined the horcruxes working as half-lives as well. However, Dumbledore never said he necessarily split his soul in half- only a piece of it. But it seems like if it was one set number he couldn't create an unlimited amount of horcrux. I like the idea of it being a percentage each time- whether it's 50% or 7%. Would that mean his first horcrux is the most powerful?

To the 11 year old girl: Don't worry about what those kids say. I've had some problems being a Harry Potter fan in high school, but I know that those people don't even know what they're talking about. I was Hermione for halloween (at the age of 17) and won best costume at my school. I also just made a speech at graduation, and used a Harry Potter quote. And after I said it, I found a few other fans who started cheering. So don't worry, just don't listen to those kids.

I definitely think John should ask about Dawlish! JK would totally answer it, too. It'd be great.

Posted by: Hufflepuff31 Jun 26 2006, 12:39 PM

I also want to say something about the 11 year old who called in. If the teasing continues, please tell an adult. Your parents need to know if something like this is going on as well as an adult at school who can help you. It sounds like you are very bright. Perhaps the other students are just not mature enough for Potter? console.gif

John, I totally got the Rent reference!

Yay. Eddie Izzard babies on spikes reference by John. Points at life for that one. The guys did really good on this episode, but I missed Melissa too. I kind of want to make John a What Would Melissa Do? bracelet now. Hope CC is back next week!

You know, I was reading HBP again the other day, and they mention Dawlish again. Not only does Tonks mention him, but Harry then asks about him. A little more attention is drawn to him. I actually do think that he will turn up again now!

I was glad to see the fan interview make a return. I wish we could have the fan interview and the canon conundrums each week, but then the show would be too long for some people burning it to cds.

Modcast was great! I like the topic you chose, it's so complicated it's hard for fans to delve into it on their own, so it's good to hear other people's ideas and discussion on it. And I liked Asphodel Wormwood's idea about the half-life. That could be why his humanness was diminished as it went on. But I don't think that the amount of soul in something determines how hard it is to deafeat; I would think that the ring had a sort of enchantment on it that when you destroyed it, it released a plume of fire or something.

I was as well, at the age of 17, dressed as Hermione at school and of course got weird stares and eye rolling since they knew it was me, but I didn't care! I told them, everyone has something they're obsessed with or makes them happy and get this connection. For me it's Harry Potter. Sure, most of the time my friends now tell me to shut up about the new scene for the Queen or that Daniel Radcliffe's hair is too short, but don't give up something you love because of other people.
ok, I've gotten through a teensy portion of Pottercast and here are some of my notes:
-Harry hooligans
-Hedwig's haircut and diet
-photoshopped movie 3 Harry
-showing how you made the horrible fire for Sirius

Great show! (Though I really missed Melissa, she needs some time off.) I hope that the kitten doesn't permanetely recognise it's name to be "Dawlish." It would be kind of like Ginny naming Ron's owl Pigwidgeon.

Edited to add:
To the 11-year-old girl:
Don't listen to those people! I've gotten some comments when I do things like wear my Mugglecast t-shirt to school. All this time you've spent anylising HP is going to really help you with English class, and soon those who were teasing you will be begging you to help them with their homework.

I would laugh so hard if the cat only answered 2 Dawlish! lol.gif
John u da bomb!!!!!!!

Dawlish

best melissaless pottercast ever, yay for john and his rent reference even if andrew and sue were confused. and i was in hysterics when ben asked john if he thought harry would want to die a virgin, which encouraged my dad to to look at me strangley and ask me iff i was ok. The cat is adorable, please keep it melissa. yay for the collision of pottercast and mugglecast, i love when that happens.

Posted by: DracoCrazy Jun 26 2006, 09:42 PM

It was sad at first that there was no Melissa, but overall the show was good. I love those muggle boys too. smile.gif I am looking forward to the trio being back next week though, biggrin.gif and I just have to say that I started reading OOtP again a while ago and I just reached the part where Fudge tries to arrest Dumbledore in his office. I started laughing because Dawlish is in that part, so thanks, John for ruining a part of that book that isn't supposed to be funny!

No, J/K! I love that I can laugh at things after PotterCast is over. I love you guys!

Dawwwwwwwwwlish!

Posted by: elizabeth18 Jun 27 2006, 12:00 AM

Too bad Melissa couldn't make it! I really liked the modcast this week -very interesting topic, though it got a little too mathmatical for me. Like Jo, I don't do math. The fan interview was really interesting as well. Fascinating to hear from someone who lives in a country that has sort of "fallen under the global radar", and even more interesting to hear that the kids who read HP are less racist than those who don't. I'm sure Jo would be very pleased to hear that. smile.gif

Posted by: nerdynerdenstein Jun 27 2006, 12:04 AM

Good show, but I missed Melissa! And I was really looking forward to the CC this week, but maybe it will give me time to send in my voicemail, as I forgot to this week!

-"You should be spanked for that."

-John and his wand play!

-Really great modcast! I always thought of the soul splitting kind of like Lori said with the half life. There is this paradox, I can't remember the name of it, but it is basically that you can never really reach a destination. You start at a certain point, and go halfway. Then you go halfway again. You keep going halfway, but you can never really reach your destination because there are an infinite number of "halfways", no matter how small. I always thought that Voldemort could continue to split his remaining soul in half until the end of time and never "run out" of his original soul.

-I also like the fact that the mods pointed out that your soul tears whenever you commit a murder, not only when you are making a horcrux. I think I commented in a reading group that I picture it like a piece of paper in a bowl. When you commit a murder, the paper tears, but remains in the bowl. You can commit many murders and tear your soul many times, but the entire paper will still remain in the bowl. If you are killed, all of those soul fragments die. But if you make a horcrux, you simply take a torn piece from the bowl and put it somewhere else. That's why I think you can wait and use a murder that you commited earlier to make a howcrux now. But I also agree with Kimmy that it will probably mend in time, though there will always be a scar there.

-Leave it to Lori to wonder why having a complete soul is important!

Posted by: elizabeth18 Jun 27 2006, 12:06 AM

Oh, and I forgot to mention that if the cat is beginning to respond to Dawlish, you definately need to keep it, Melissa. Everyone needs cute little kitten - and come on, with a face like that, how could you resist? tongue.gif

Great Show!

I missed Melissa aswell. I thought it was a stunt when the geek2geek add came on. For a split second I was like 'Melissa!', but it was the recording. Fooled, i admit it.

Id *really* like to thank the Mods for their Modcast this week. I wanted anything to do with Horcruxes, and though im sure it wasn't for me, i got what i wanted anyway! Its going to take me a while to go through my notebook devoted to Horcruxes and span off all those thoughts iv had. Should be great!

Side splitting funniness again guys!

Actually, iv just remembered! The muggleboys were on the show and i totally forgot to listen to their show cause they were on Pottercast!
lol. Whoops!

I also believe that John has actually played with his wand with his feet. Of course, where his funny came from. If not, the visual is there now. And thats all that matters!

Posted by: KimmyBlair Jun 27 2006, 07:51 AM

Thanks everyone who liked the Fan Interview and Modcast! Soul splitting is somthing that I have wanted to discuss for a while now. It's just such an interesting concept. I LOVED how into the topic Lorie was! She just kept wanting to talk about different aspects of soul splitting, which lead to the great discussion!

Also I'm really glad some of you found what moriah said as interesting as I did! i agree with those of you who said Jo would be proud of the lack of discrimination which her readers have. Also I loved the first hand details about how proud the country was of Stan (who played Krum), and that Jo mentioned them in her stories.

I have to admit that I didn't even realize their was a RENT reference till I started reading this thread, but now I get it!

Posted by: Karyn Jun 27 2006, 08:27 AM

I had two things that came to mind about the soul splitting. If you can commit the murder and make the horcrux later, couldn't Voldemort have made an infinite number of horcruxes since he was restored to his body? I mean, he would still have been able to make the horcrux from the death of the Potters. I think there must be a time limit.
The other thing that I thought was how akin to calculus it was. It is like limits, you can break it infinitively in half and never reach 0. You come infinitively close, but if you take half, you'll always have some left over. In the end you could have 1/1 000000 but you would still have some left.
But as I commented earlier, I'll leave it at that

Posted by: JazzyDupa Jun 27 2006, 08:52 AM

I really liked this podcast, but I just lo0ve listening to Andrew and John together, they are so funny!

I got the RENT reference, that was great, I can totally see Andrew playing Mark!!

I also liked the modcast with the half-life discussion. I think this could be quite possible and an interesting thing to think about. As they discussed about how you can tape a pice of paper back together after it is torn; I think of a dollar bill, if it tears you can tape and still ues it at a store, however a vending machine will not take it- it is still too damaged for certain aspects of life!- a little bit of a rant, but that is what came to mind when I heard it.

About the fan interview- I was wondering the same type of thing, how Harry Potter fans are treated in other countries as I will be moving to Germany in 4 weeks. I will be there for 5 months and was curious about the reaction fans receive- whether it is as big as it is here in the states.

Great job ib the podcast everyone!! Good to hear some Muggle boys on there for a change!

Posted by: Mini_Moose Jun 27 2006, 09:17 AM

Yay! Great show! Im glad that fan interview is back, I really enjoyed this one. I really did miss Melissa (and Steve!!!) though.

*Sigh* I can't wait till next week! Im counting down the days already!

But Voldemort's goal wasn't to create an infinite number of horcruxes. He wanted to split his soul 7 times because he thought "7" was a powerful number. He may be scared to die, but i think even he would see the problems with creating 20 horcruxes.

Okay, I tried to post yesterday, but my connection to the Lounge went all funny... *curses technological difficulties* Anyway, here's what I wanted to say:

I was a bit scared when I saw the title of this PotterCast - what!? No Melissa!? But, John, you rose to the challenge beautifully: a good combination of trying to keep the show moving, but still making the goofy, off-the-wall comments that we have grown to know and love.

I hope that the 11-year-old who called in reads this thread, so she can get some encouragement. A couple people have already shared some ideas. I definitely agree that she is at a hard age when kids can be very cruel. Anyone who is being teased should remember that the people doing the teasing are generally acting on their own insecurities - it's THEIR problem, not yours. Maybe a good comeback would be to cite the number of Harry Potter books that have sold: over 300 million copies worldwide as of last October. You are definitely not the only Harry Potter fan!

Posted by: elizabeth18 Jun 27 2006, 03:20 PM

It's funny, because I started reading the books at 11 (six years ago! I can't believe it) and literally everyone in my class read Harry Potter and loved it. That's why I originally bought it - because all of my friends had read it. Harry Potter was super cool in my fifth grade class - maybe that shows what a gigantic bunch of geeks we all were. smile.gif

Like they said on the Modcast a couple weeks ago, "Embrace your inner nerd."

John referencing Eddie Izzard and Rent? I heart you, John! And the talk of Voldemort going easy on Mrs. Bones... oh dear.

Dug the Modcast (even the maths, which I hate), and I hope the Dawlish-kitty finds a good home.

Posted by: pippin22 Jun 27 2006, 05:06 PM

I loved this pottercast, it was missing melissa, but it was soo funny. Probably the funniest pc I've ever listened to.

As for the 11 year old girl, people will start to be more interested in hp as they grow older. Ben didn't even like harry potter until he saw one of the movies. I work with 17-20 year olds, and today harry potter just kind of tied into our discussion of something totally weird and different. So people will be more mature as they grow up. I liked andrews advice smile.gif

Posted by: melodywenn Jun 27 2006, 05:39 PM

I was thinking about the voicemail from the 11 year old girl in relation to the radio show that I just listened to that our own Melissa was on. On the radio show, the hosts asked Melissa if anyone ever told her that she should get a life, and acted surprised that a later caller didn't name her son Harry. They ended their show by condescendingly telling us fans not to worry about Harry, because it really will be okay. In some ways, this seems like the adult equivalent of calling Harry Potter Harry Poopyface! It's just done in slightly more grown up language, with a tone of voice that looks down on fans of the books, instead of a tone of voice that's just mean. Kids tease each other all the time, and if it's not about Harry Potter, then it's about something else. But as those of us who listened to the radio broadcast today heard, adults will make fun of other adults, too! Whether it's because of someone's own personal insecurity or to make oneself look better and more clever on the radio--for whatever reason, it just happens.

What can the 11 year old girl do when she's made fun of for loving a great series of books? What can any of us, of any age, do?

I think we can do exactly what Melissa did on the radio! Dismiss their teasing. Ignore it, or tell them that we love the life that we're leading, or recommend that they go pick up a book and see what they're missing, because hey, 300 million copies published can't be wrong.

We're Harry Potter fans! We embrace our inner nerd, if you want to call it nerdiness, we have fun, we discuss books, we connect with other people, and if you think about Moriah's fan interview, we may tend to be more understanding and accepting of others. There's nothing in any of that to be ashamed of, no matter what others might want us to think. Whether you're the 11 year old girl of this week's Pottercast or the great Melissa Anelli or Jan from Canada with a little boy who is NOT named Harry, there is a chance that people aren't going to understand the fun that we have with all of this, and use our fun as an opportunity to mock or tease. But. If the whole "strength in numbers" thing is true, then we're in good shape, because as far as being a fan of Harry Potter goes, none of us are alone.

Melody that was really cool! I agree and I feel sorry for that girl. If it’s happening with 11 year olds! Wow! At my school (year 10) I am out of the Harry Potter closet and no one really cares. I'm still normal I just have this other little part. It would have been good if Melissa had been on the mailbag but the guys handled it okay anyway.

I just think Sue should be commended for putting up with all those boys. It was a great PC very funny! Great work to John for trying to be sensible during the mailbag and push things along.

Melodywenn, Great post. clap.gif

I listened to the radio show today too. I stopped listening after they came back from the break and made a sarcastic comment about losing sleep over Harry's potential death. I think the guy was trying to be funny, but it came off very pompous. It was like I said in the comments on the main page, when you've invited important people from a particular fandom to talk on your show, it's not a good idea to undermind what they love right in front of them.

On a similar note, today my mother told me that she wants me to bring the first book to the beach so she can read it for the first time while we are on vacation. My mom is 59 years old, has a PHD in Psychology, and teaches at a major university. Obviously, she is a very mature woman with her head on her shoulders.

So just because we like the books, doesn't mean we are immature and stupid.

Edited because I embraced my inner nerd a little too much.

This was a very good episode, though I missed Melissa and Steve and CC. Still, I really enjoyed the fan interview and I got a double dose of Andrew as he is my favorit MuggleCaster. I just think it's funny how this show got a very low rating on PotterCast.com. I think the average is like 3.66 which is the ratings of some of the earlier episodes. Was it because there was no Melissa? Still, John was as hilarious as ever, espeically with his WWMD bracelet joke and how if you bring you Lumos wristband to NYC, you get to makeout with Ben Schoen. Awesoe. I would totally buy a WWMD bracelet.

On Monday I went down with gastric flu. By night-time I was feeling absolutely awful; pains in my stomach, aching all over, shivering & cold with a fever & I couldn't sleep. But Pottercast got me through the night.

Thank you Pottercast! flowers.gif

Loved the fan interview!

I enjoyed the show, but I missed Melissa. The soul-splitting discussion was brilliant, and I like the idea of half-life. What if the soul, when it is 'split', loses its radiance rather than mass? I imagine the soul as a cloud that just gets emptier and emptier when it gets ripped again and again. And then in the end, you get Voldemort, who doesn't radiate any warmth at all anymore. Maybe I'm rambling, but I like the image.

And to the eleven-year old girl: I read a newspaper article about what children read in school (in Scandinavia, where I live), and not very many children of your age read Harry Potter. Why? They found the books too difficult (translated versions...yes, I was a little bit shocked). So it's certainly not childish to read them. If these people you talk about miss out on good books because of preconceived ideas, it is their problem, not yours. It is just absurd to tease someone for reading a bestseller.

Well,

Was on a school trip Monday so I once again missed the chat, the thing didn't download onto my iPod in time so I couldn't listen to it one the bus. Then, on the way to College on Tuesday, I made a massive mistake in getting Mugglecast out of the way with first, so I actually didn't finish listening to Pottercast until late Tuesday night. Yesturday I was busy and couldn't get online. College have also threatened to give me a 3 day computer ban if I go on non 'genuine work related' sites in college hours...

Great show guys, but I too missed Melissa! John did a fab job on the intro though. When he said about what he would like to ask JKR, Dawlish instantly popped into my head and that's the closed I've ever come to lauging out loud on the bus!

Great show as usual, but I missed Melissa (someone has to keep John in line, and it's so much funnier with a foil than with John self-censoring).

Always a riot, though I missed the Canon Conundrums segment.

Where was Sue when John was saying she'd be a Death Eater?

Ha! I forgot the Conumdroms weren't there! Did everyone hear Lorie say the L-word too!!!!??

I missed Melissa, but John's intro was well done, really ! Also, it's really fun to hear the Mugglecast guys too.

So, John are you really going to ask Jo what house Dawlish is in ???? lol.gif

Yay!!! Three cheers for the Fan-Interview being back. Hip Hip-- *pin drops in the silence*

I think Dawlish is a Ravenclaw...and...what is this in past Pottercasts about Noe being a Slytherin? Hmm...that explains sooo much.

I did!! Originally I said somthing pointing it out and calling Lori a hufflepuff, but I have a feeling it was edited out due to it's offtopicness... (I can't blame them) Lori is saying the "L" word more and more these days!!1

Thanks for the great feedback on the Fan Interview guys!

A karaoke afterparty after the NYC Leaky Mug would be TOO MUCH FUN! Let's put out a fan challenge to come up with a Karaoke filk! Best one gets a burrito on John!

By the way, I think someone said in this episode that somebody should make a decent sorting hat. There's one you might like http://www.personalitylab.org/tests/ccq_hogwarts.htm, it takes a while to answer the questions but the answers are really detailed and you get a percentage of how much of each house you are at the end.

That was a good sorting hat! I (of course) was sorted into SLYTHERIN!! Try it, it takes five minutes!
