Just listening now, up to Canon Conundrums at the moment. Run down from Ark ha. The fan interview was really interesting, so much stuff about Arithmacy I didn't think about before. Shame it's a Melissa-less episode but John and Sue are still awesome.

Posted by: suzb Oct 29 2006, 07:08 PM

Yay! Now I have something to listen to while I type up my essay, no Melissa, thats a shame. *clicks play*

Posted by: moochka-dawlish Oct 29 2006, 08:05 PM

Yay PotterCast! I just finished listening to it, now I'm biggrin.gif It's a shame Melissa wasn't there but John and Sue great (as always).

Posted by: LilaViseckBrious Oct 29 2006, 08:29 PM

John! You weren't wearing your WWMD braclet during this episode. Well, I didn't mind. Reeses stuff was so funny.

CC was great. I agree with Guru/Jason. I'm really excited for the next CC. I think Harry will get more information out of Dumbledore's pensive over his painiting.

sad.gif Melissa was missed. Did Melissa get a virus or something or was she just not around?

Posted by: LacewingFlies Oct 29 2006, 09:00 PM

Great show! clap.gif The Canon Conundrums was great, but I miss Melissa. sad.gif

Nice show, guys! Weird to hear just John and Sue chatting, I must say. Canon Conundrums was pretty good - but I'm really excited to hear the discussion next. Portraits have always fascinated/confused/driven me crazy.

The fan interview this week was really good - I'd never thought about Arithmancy before. I may have to trawl through the Lounge a bit and read some threads on it - sounds really interesting!

Posted by: Aornis Oct 29 2006, 10:23 PM

Oh wonderful show as usual. It was so short though! It's really nice to see some just Sue and John joking around. The trio is perfection, but Sue and John just totally play off of each other in such an amusing way!

Nice little show smile.gif

I liked the random chat at the end it was true to form PotterCast tongue.gif

I really enjoyed the fan interview. I didn't know much about arithmancy so I will have to look it up...

Congratulations to Danae for winning too... that art rocked.

Posted by: Dawlicious Oct 30 2006, 03:20 AM

Yay Danae! Although they made your name sound like "Don A."

I'm bored, so...
Steve Vander Ark = Stark? tongue.gif
Steve Vander Ark = See Vader? conf.gif
Steve Vander Ark = Steven Dark? (kinda sounds like a 3 syllable version of his whole name)
Vander's probably cool enough on its own

Yeah, I think I'm in the zone of thinking Trelawney's predictions have a ray of truth, but she just doesn't know what to make of them (until she gets "possessed").

Posted by: Rosemarica Oct 30 2006, 04:29 AM

I can't belive all that Arythmacy. I have done some reading of numerology and discoverd some interesting things about my own family, but I never read into the potter books with numerology on the brain!.
That fan intervew was realy interesting did Jo mean to have harry and nevile conected neumerologicaly? So bizzar!

As for our favorite "old bat" I thought she was a frawed till that profecy in PoA and then I didn't realy think much of harry and ron's made up predictions or Profesor T's predictions till the HBP when it was quite clear that she was realy good but had no idear about her own potential.

The reason I didn't think much of her predictions or harry and rons befour is because you can say anything when predicting the future. Provided your not specific you can prove yourself right after a chance event has happened that fits your prediction. Like the star sighn predictions in the news paper and magazines.

My sister and i sometime make cups of turkish coffee drink them then turn the cups upside down and read eachothers futures off how the remaining coffee has run out of the cup. on the inside of the cup you can interprite the images. My sister is realy good at it. one time she said a monster is going speak to you. 2 second later the person I least wanted to talk (my monster) to was on the phone!. However I don't belive in divination or any kind of fortune telling. we just do the coffee thing for a bit of a laugh.

Very interesting PotterCaat today, though I did miss Melissa! Everyone's human colds seem to have infected their computers now - mine's poorly too.

Facinating Fan Interview and I think the word for this week's Conundrums is 'interesting'... ponder.gif

OMG amazing PotterCast was amazing this week, but I missed Melissa (us Melissa's have to stick together!!!) sad.gif but it was good to see John and Sue bouncing off each other smile.gif It was a shame it was soo short!!

I never really looked at the numerology side to HP before, I especially like the Snape references...who would have thought it had such a deep significance?!?!

The CC was really interesting, but I don't think I can totally agree with either sides, so I'm in the middle on this one!! *goes to sit on the fence*

Can't wait for next week and hopefully Melissa will be back and it will be back to the longer episodes!!!

Glad everyone liked the fan interview! I was nervous about it... I suggest for more info on Arithmancy read Witherwings Scribbulous Essay on the subject! It was a fascinating read and wish I would of been able to read it before...

I don't know if she did have the destiney number connection with Neville and Harry before or if it was just a really big coindence!

Posted by: cjopbj Oct 30 2006, 02:13 PM

I enjoy the Pottercasts podcasts very much. I listen to them while exercising. I didn't understand something in the numberology interview. How can Snape be both a 1 and a 2?

Thanks

Posted by: SillyPutty Oct 30 2006, 02:18 PM

There are several numbers that come up in Arithmancy:

1.Character/Destiny: indicates the general personality type of the individual. This is the total of all the numbers the name represents.
2.Heart/Soul Urge: is what a person hides from the world. It’s their inner soul and their fears. This number comes from final number of all the vowels in the name.
3.Social/Inner Dreams: is the face the person shows to the outside world. This number comes from the final number of all the constantants of the name

Snapes character is a 2
Heart/Soul - 1
Social - 1

I enjoyed this PotterCast. It was short and sweet, although I did miss Melissa. She should have called Dawwwlish to get that ghoul out of her computer. I loved the fan interview. It made me want to try and find a book about numerology and do all that number stuff. Also, is it just a coincidence that the name of this episode, The John and Sue show sounds a lot like The Dawn and Drew Show title or is whoever makes the title a fan of that show. Hmmm.....

this was only my second pottercast. I loved it, although i missed melissa. Sillyputty, you did a great job also!

Yeeeeey! 61 ws great. But as many, I did miss Melissa. John and Sue did well, though. clap.gif

I particularly enjoyed Canon Conundrums. But I was surprised that one topic didn't come up. We know that Trelawney's grandmother was called Cassandra. And Steve talking about Trelawney getting things right but not believing it, made me think of something. In highschool I majored in German (I'm from Germany) and we read some books about the Trojan War: some of the original Homer, Christa Wolf's "Cassandra" and Marion Zimmer-Bradley's "The Firebrand". Cassandra is a daughter of Priam and Hecuba of Troy, making her a sister to Hector and Paris. In the legend, the Greek God of Sun, Apollo, fell in love with her because of her beauty and gave the gift of prophecy. As Cassandra didn't return his love, Apollo cursed her so that noone would ever believe her predictions.

I get the feeling this might be a family thing. Cassandra Trelawney is called in the books "a very famous, very gifted Seer" by Dumbledore (OotP, Brit. ed., p.740). But maybe she did something wrong of some point and her gift is taken away. No god will have taken this talent away, I think, but what about like Sybill Trelawney she started drinking or escaped in another way and this took away her credibility. I guess, in general, the gift of sight is difficult to live with...

I know there's no evidence for this in the canon, but I'm trying to find something there... the name Cassandra is just too tempting.

What do you think? I'd love to hear your opinions.

Well I definitely think she named her Cassandra for a reason. It's incredible how much research and thought she puts into her characters names. It's like finding an easter egg every time a new character is introduced.

I agree with Guru. I think Trelawney acts the way she does because of her family history. She takes herself way too seriously.

Congrats Danae, miss Melissa and Dawlish (I don't think there was a single Dawlish the whole show...)

About Trelawney, there is a wonderful essay at Scribulus, http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/#scribbulus:essay:236 were all of Trelawney predictions are listed and analised. I totally agree with Zarathustra on the theory that Trelawney is a true seer, but nearsighted!!!
She sees, but she doesn't see clearly, and botches up her interpretations.

Like Jo always chooses her names very carefully, I think that Trelawney is a Sybil - a true seer, but she is also a Cassandra - cursed by the fact that nobody believes her predictions - not even herself. So she puts up a show, all the beads, and stuff.

I think that JK went to great lenghts to discredit Trelawney - in the Philosopher's Stone, McGonagall says with no aparent reason at all that she dislikes divination. Hermione, the ever logical one also dislikes divination - although she likes arithmancy that is a form of divination. Harry is led to loath the subject because Trelawney is always predicting his death - and I think she is right! There was a black dog after Harry in Book 3, and Harry was in real danger of death. He has been, since Voldermort found out about his whereabouts in book 1, and will be in greater and greater danger as he looks for the Horcruxes. The predictions only indicate the trends and tendencies - they are not written in stone. Harry is in real danger of death - and he knows that - but he rather not think about it right now and just live his life. He could just decide to go live in a bomb shelter and hope that Voldermort never finds him - but that would make for a very boring book!

I also believe that all wizards can see, to a certain degree, as long as they get trained in the forms of divination, just as us, muggles, can as well. Anyone can learn how to read cards, or hands. But some people will have more talent than others - I guess I see it as a musical talent: everybody can learn to sing or play an instrument - you can train and practice - but some people have a natural talent. They will grab an instrument they have never played and figure them out, they will pick up tunes by ear and they will be able to compose. I can play guitar around a fireplace, if I have the ciphers in front of me, after I have practiced that song for a while. I have no talent for music. But I can paint watercolors like few people I know. I know people who practice and practice. They can draw, and they learn to paint with acrilics but they cannot react as fast as watercolors run over water - they have no talent in this area...

I rant...

Hey CC'ers!! this week John, Sue, Ark and Guru in particular

Okay, first of all i wanted to thank you for this CC topic because I think it's one we all address and also it's an essential topic to the RG rooms right now as well.

Just how much of it is false predictions Trelawney makes or how much of these things does she really know.

It appears like no one takes Trelawney seriously though...Even Firenze sees her form of "inner eye" a bit out there as well as Minerva and Hermione. However, they don't disregard divinations all together. Just various forms of figuring this out whether it be numerology, symbolism or astronomy.

I'd have to agree with Steve about this one because I think Trelawney does make many accurate predictions only doesn't have the capabilities to clearly make out and control her gift. Simply because she is from the family of a very talented Seer, I think everyone just assumed she'd known how to hone her talent instead of teaching her how to control and detect it when it happens. Which is why you see wishy washy predictions for predictions sake and her blacking out during her trance like ones (where something overpowers her voices of reason and just uses her as a tool for delivery) and thank you for saying this because....there's a lot of people who believe her to be nothing more than a crackpot drunk and i just don't see it this way at all...i see inexperience in controling a gift.

I don't think she's a fraud just because she was never taught how to use her gift. That doesn't make her a fraud it makes her uneducated. (thinking most predominantly about predicting Harry's Bday)

(as a slight...weird and off topic comment...i get a kick each time i spell check and the checker wants to change "Hermione" to hormones. blush.gif...)

Can I just say... That interview with Varza on Arithmancy was ever so intriguing.
I always knew numbers had something to the plotline, like everybody in the forum you get to know about math being of so much significance to the world and beyond..

I think I'll take a deeper look into Arithmancy now.

And yes, I know I'm late with this, but I had to play catch up because life got in the way as usual with us Potterfans.
