Hi, chloe from Pomerania! You can find all of the information that we have on the Harry Potter fabrics http://www.leakylounge.com/Harry-Potter-fabrics-t29488.html, but the short answer to your question is that ebay is pretty much the only fabric source at this time.

Hi Guys,

Right, this is actually my first proper post here so please.... be gentle with me! lol

Myself and a friend are planning to put together a couple of Death Eater outfits but we need to make them "movie accurate" (so not just fancy dress / cosplay). It's because we're actually part of a costuming club and one of the things which the club prides itself on is being as movie accurate as possible (which is providing "interesting" in this case to say the least - still, I love a challange! lol)

We've been surfing the web for a while now to get as much info and many reference pics as possible but seem to have got about all we can (which sadly isn't enough) .... so we could really do with a helping hand.

There are a couple of costumes we're aiming for, but primarily we want to do:
a) Lucius Malfoy's Death Eater outfit from Order of the Phoenix (specifically, from the Battle for the Prophecy scene)
b) Another (male) Death Eater (from the same scene) - I love Bellatrix's mask but sadly because of the need to stay "movie accurate" I can't use it wink.gif
c) Voldemort (again, from the same film)

Does anyone have either:
a) some really good reference pics (behind the scenes pics would also be cool as we're struggling to find any pics showing the boots, Lucius' ring (which is different to his "Formal wear" ring, or the pattern on the arm of his battle outfit.

b) *any* information about *any* parts of the costume? what fabrics were used, any pattern info, what kind of boots were used, etc - anything would be really helpful blush.gif but again, it needs to be as "movie accurate" as possible. If you coud cite your source that might also be really helpful - for example, I recently saw in an interview with Jason Isaacs & Ralph Fiennes that for Voldemort's robe they use over 50m of Silk (shame they didn't mention which colour number and supplier! lol)

c) information about useful links where we might be able to get custom stuff made if necessary (Mods - sorry, newbie question - is it OK to post that here? If not, feel free to remove that bit)

Thanks all biggrin.gif

Well, Kessa, we do happen to have a tutorial for a great movie canon http://www.leakylounge.com/Death-Eater-Mask-t61161.html.

We also have a tutorial for http://www.leakylounge.com/Simple-Canon-Robes-t54614.html and http://www.leakylounge.com/Madam-Hooch-s-Quidditch-R-t60678.html. A combination of the two would make a fairly accurate set of Death Eater Robes, I'm thinking.

You may also want to check out the http://gallery.the-leaky-cauldron.org/category/110 of the Gallery, where they have great shots of stills from all of the movies, and the http://video.the-leaky-cauldron.org/, where just about every Potter-related video known to mankind is posted - just for your viewing pleasure!

I hope this helps get you on your way - and make sure to e-mail us pictures of your completed costumes so we can add them to the gallery!

Hi Jenn,

Thanks ever so much. I actually came across that tutorial in my initial research smile.gif .

It's an excellent tutorial, but if I'm honest probably not quite accurate enough for what I need (hope that does offend anyone - I'm not knocking it at all unsure.gif )

To give you an idea of the kind of accuracy I need to achieve, one of my other costumes is movie accurate StormTrooper armour. One of the guys in the costuming club actually did a load of research a few years back, and managed to not only track down the type of paint used for the ab-plate buttons, but actually managed to find out the exact colour numbers.

So with the Death Eater ourfit I need to do things like get the right kind of Fabric (weight, colour, thickness, etc) for the robes and stitch it with exactly the right pattern.

Same again for the leather tunic - right down to the pattern on the arms (which is proving tricky as all of the ref pics seem to be partial shots, and are quite dark)

For the mask I'm thinking of using one of the Nobel collection ones, but even that will probably need a bit of modding (weathering, etc)

Boots, ring, Belt - all need to be identical to those used in the film.

Ultimately, it needs to look like Lucius has just walked straight off the set to go and punish a few muggles lucius.gif

Hope that helps a bit more?

Sorry we can't be of more help, Kessa, but that really goes beyond crafts and delves deep into the world of role playing.

As I said in my first post to you, though, make sure to check out the gallery and video gallery on Leaky's main site. I'm sure you could find something to help you along your way.

You may also want to check out some Potter-themed role playing sites to see if you can gather any info from there.

I'll be honest with you here, you're going to have to use some creativity. The Death Eater costumes just plain aren't shown in their entirety, and not shown in tremendous detail, and unless you can actually get to see the costumes up close and in person, you will have to extrapolate as best you can from what you can see on screen and in the photos that we have available-- which are useful, but won't give you the exact, detailed head to toe reference you seem to be looking for. We do get a glimpse of some of the Death Eater costumes in the "Costume Drama" featurette, but it's just that-- a glimpse of costumes that vanish pretty much entirely on screen-- and unfortunately there just aren't many images and additional information available, as there are with the Star Wars and some other movie sagas. So you will need to use your imagination!

When I wanted to do a Death Eater "extra" costume, I looked at the Costume Drama to find some of the things that the DE designs had in common-- swirl designs on all of them mostly, but otherwise they are not that similar-- looked as closely as I could at Lucius and Bellatrix's costumes, and then created a design from there. You'll probably need to do something similar.

My results are here: http://www.suspiciouscloset.com/deatheater.html

I'm not sure if you had come across these during your research, Kessa, but I hope they help.

I would also recommend trying to find some costume cards such as http://www.uncollectibles.net/images/hpootpu%20-%20death%20eater%20mask%20and%20costume%20prop%20card%2027.jpg to give you a more detailed idea of fabrics.

Hi Guys,

Sorry it's been a while since I posted here. I've been a busy boy with my research for Lucius and Voldemort.

Thanks for the links and info guys. I've already come across those but thanks for sharing them.

Yeah, that's definately the best place to start- if anyone else is thinking of doing this then definately check it out (its on YouTube if you can't find it anywhere else)

I've just taken a look and yours and think you'e done an amazing job - it looks awesome. I wish I had the skills to do that!

With regards the costume I'm looking to recreate, it needs to be as idential to Lucius' as I can make it. Thankfully although reference pics are pretty slim on the ground I've managed to gather enough together now from screengrabs from the movie, behind the scenes shots, featurettes, interviews, etc to be able to fill in most of the blanks. The only thing I'm not 100% about are the boots, but I have a pretty good idea about these, and I'm currently trying to find out for sure what they used in the film.

At the moment I've had to switch my focus to my other costume which is going to be for Lord Voldemort, as I need to get this ready for early next year and there's shed loads to do. In fact, of the whole "to do" list the costume itself is probably one of the easier parts! http://java%20script:add_smilie(

I've been learning all about Prosthetics which has been a really steep learning curve (not to mention it's bloomin' expensive sad.gif ) - still, hopefully if I can pull it off the wife will forgive me! lol

Oh, and I've had my "lifecast" done which is the first step towards creating the full head mask - this is the only place where I can legitimately move away slightly from the approach they used in the film as they digitally removed Voldemort's nose, and enhanced certain facial features so that the only way I can faithfully recreate a similar effect in a "real life" environment. That said, even with this approach I'm going to try and keep everything as true to the original as possible.

Here's a piccie of me mid-cast:

I've also been researching creating a set of costum dentures in order to recreate Voldemort's teeth.

I've got a wand now - that was the easy bit ... and am currently working with a friend of mine who works at an optician to try and obtain some coloured contact lenses which are the right shade.

So all in all, things are moving well - I'll post with another update when I have one

Wow! I really can't wait to see the end result on this one! Looks like you've already got a few dozens of hours of research and crafting behing you... and it's only the tip of the iceberg! I'm sure those efforts will pay off though, as your ideas sounds perfect and it looks like the end result will have no choice but to be amazing!

Good luck with your casting! I tried to do that, thinking I was going to make a mask too, but it turns out I am not a sculptor. smile.gif
