Harry Potter discussion forum for movies, books, and more! - The Leaky Lounge _ Memories of the HP Experience: The Pensieve Parlor _ Are Any of Your Real Life Teachers HP Characters?

Posted by: GTScout Jun 12 2006, 06:47 PM

One of the things that I've always loved about the Harry Potter series is the fact that while many of the teachers we've seen pass through Hogwarts hallowed halls are over-blown and comical, we can still see a lot of the characteristics of our own instructors in them. I've certainly had at least one Trelawney, and more than one McGonagall, but there's a wealth of teachers, (most of them former DADA) to choose from that we might be able to compare our own experiences to.

So, which of your teachers really remind you of a Hogwarts instructor, and why?

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I looked and couldn't find anything like it.

Cheers!!!

I used to name almost all of my teachers at Highschool with HP-characters.

My gymnastics teacher was a bit of a Hagrid, because he was really nice to everybody and was kinda big (from my point of view) and round tongue.gif
My religion teacher (I'm not sure they teach that class in the UK or US or anywhere outside of the Netherlands but since I went to a Christian school you get to learn about other religions such as Buddhism and Judaism) was a kind of Remus Lupin. He was a really, really good teacher and we always had lots of fun with him. But apart from that he was also kinda wise and intelligent, which I believe is Remus Lupin also...

Than we had our own kind of Filch biggrin.gif He was our concierge and was kinda smelly, if you know what I mean. Although he didn't have a cat, he loved to give detention!

And our Libarian was a real Ms. Pince! She kicks you out when you eat or when you go to non-school related sites or send emails! And she is a real bookworm to smile.gif

Glad to see I'm not the only one that has compared their teachers to Hogwarts Professors!

Our school librarian is definitely a Madam Pince. She yells at you over every little thing and is always hovering about, trying to make sure you do absolutely nothing wrong.

My physics teacher is a Trelawney, she's crazy and not such a great teacher.

My government teacher is a Hagrid. He's big and loveable and friendly. You can also walk over him a little bit because he's so nice.

Not quite teachers, but there was a remarkable correlation between the Hogwarts professors and some of my tutors at library school (which shall remain nameless... just in case!):

Cataloguing tutor = Snape - he had that sneery delivery down to a T

Collection management tutor = Gilderoy Lockhart - boy did he love himself. And if you listened to him he'd done every library job possible. And a horribly large number of the female students were in love with him (not me though!)

IT tutor = Ludo Bagman - tried ever so hard to be cool and popular but was actually a bit of an idiot

Scary how these people do exist...

Although, as a librarian myself, I have to say I'm disappointed to hear there are so many real life Madam Pince's among the librarians of this world. We're not all like that, honest!!!

We have grrrrrrreat teachers in our school!! thumbup.gif (If you don't count our Geography teacher who has come over as a substitute, she has got Lockhart's pride, and has Snape's habbit of 'choosing her favourites'....She dopes not know a thing abut Geography...idiot,I'm waiting for the day when she'll leave,I'll party like mad)
Our Chemistry teacher's like Lupin, brilliant, clever ,understanding and just tooooo good,I love her!!Our librarian has a bit of of McGonnagal
in her lol.gif

I'm so sorry for those silly errors blush.gif .

Wow, I can't really think of that many of my teachers to compare with Hogwarts ones. Our math teacher could be a sort of Remus Lupin... but only because he's nice, and I like Lupin one HUNDRED times better than the math teacher. I'm not in love with my math teacher. *blushes* tongue.gif
I think one of my Homeroom teachers could have been a bit like McGonnagall... he was a bit of a kermudgeon sometimes, but really nice, though pretty strict. And every once in a while he'd really get into something, like dress up for Halloween, and everybody would be shocked. He was one of my favorites. biggrin.gif
The only teacher I have that I don't like was a Humanities guy... he is so annoying, because he will get mad at you, then tell a joke, an get mad at you for laughing. He is so confusing! And once he kept us in 10 minutes into break, I didn't like that. dry.gif Also, my mother thought he was good-looking, so I just sort of HAD to not like him. lol.gif

Lets see... I did have a 'Snape' once, but it was a female teacher, she was not an Umbridge, but a 'Snape.'

The best teacher I ever had was a World History teacher, I can't explain how much fun I had in that class and how much I learned. I can't really compare him to any other Harry Potter teacher. He was what a teacher was suppose to be. He gave lots of work, but boy could he teach. So much memories.

I have a civics teacher who is a cross between Umbridge and madam Pince. She's false & simpering but really very nasty and catty underneath it all, and the stuff she teaches is absolute bogus so I'll throw in a bit of Trelawny in there too cause they're both frauds.

I have a business teacher like McGonagall, she seemed really strict and scary to begin with but is really a softy.

My science teacher is rather like Binns(obviously though she's not a ghost) but she just drones on and on, and no ones paying attention and she just keeps going, she still remains adamant that it's excess carbon Dioxide in the class room that has us all dozy that we're not bored smile.gif

I had a teacher that had some Snape.

It was my year 11/12 Art teacher. If i knew how to spell her last name, i would freely name her.
I did have a rather *nasty* nickname made from her last name that i think she may have heard though.

But anyway. If Snape was a lady, i really dont think id like him very much. Because of this teacher i had.
For some reason, she hated me. And i have no idea why. It didn't matter how well i did in class, she would always give me a 2 out of 10 (she marked EVERYTHING), and that, of course, resulted in my failure of that subject. But she would walk around the class and praise most of the other students, and then question me about the quality of mine. I admit that i wasn't *that* great at art, but i was alot better than other students. I always thought my work was average, while there were other students that were just great, and others that were complete rubbish. But i was always given the lowest mark.
I remember vividly, she handed out our half yearly reports, and she wrote in my friends report that he would do much better if he didn't sit with my during class.

One of my last artworks we had to do was a piece of our own, where we had to depict our feelings of school and our future at that time, and i decided to do a detailed drawing for mine (as it was my strongest artistic technique). But before i handed mine in, i got a big black marker, and wrote in big bold letters 2/10 and cirlced it over the top of it.
It was my representation of how i felt about her stupid class and subject!

I had a Snape as an I.T teacher in year 10. Ok i admit i was never the best student (hating everything to do with I.T lessons at the time) but there was no need for some of his comments!
The teacher was so sexist - whenever me and my mate (who was a guy) were talking or messing around, the teacher would pick on me - not joking EVERY time. Of course i pointed this out to him but that eventually made things worse. Once he even said "I'm going to eat you!" - i can't remember how this comment occured, all i know is that i was annoying him somehow and so he retaliated by saying this in a scarily serious voice. I was so taken aback i didn't know what to say so i just laughed in his face - he didn't like that at all!!
Anyway he left at the end of the year and i've never seen him since then and that was 2 years ago now so HAPPY DAYS biggrin.gif

Actually there are to many to name. I've had some good and bad teachers in my life, but if I had to compare one to snape i would chose my 8th year math teacher. I truely believed he hated me, and i also think me and him had a relationship close to Harry's and snapes which is really none, lol. It seemed like he always wanted to get me into trouble and make sure that i never graduated to high school, lol.

I think everyone has had a teacher that is as mean as Snape and also had a teacher that is as loony as Trelaway.

I had a Social Studies teacher once who, 3 days before the end of school for a homework assignment, had us define 117 words, due the next day.

I remember our old History teacher (over 10 years ago now, I'm 26) in High School. He was an absolute psycho. He wore black robes over his suit (NO-ONE else did this! It was a state school!) and he would actually walk with his hands clutching each side of his robes. He would THWACK a ruler down in front of your desk, call us all 'idiots/gimps' and one time he threw a box of rulers at my cousins chest then told him to pick them all up when they crashed to the floor. He must have had serious problems mentally, now I come to think of it!

In primary school a teacher I had for two years was just like Umbridge. She would actually hiss at us and go bright red - I was absolutely terrified of her. I remember her screaming in my face because I was scraping the side of pencil and it was making a noise. Shiver! One of my classmates got their revenge when she was outside being told off and she said 'can you stop spitting in my face please?'Priceless, although I don't know if she's stil alive clap.gif biggrin.gif

I had a teacher in physics which was just as ambigous as Snape. He used to "read the rules" every first lession in term. Rule breaking was: being late for the start of the lesson, whearas "start" was the first chime of the bells! Takling in classes; being rude to the teacher. All these rule breakings had one consequence: being espelled from the lesson.

This teacher also used to prowl the ailses and pick up those students he thought weekest. And then he made fun of them, told them, they wouldn't have a head but just the neck with a balloon on it. It was deeply imbarassing fro those people, and most of the pupils lived in constant fear.

His exams were hard, but basically fair. His topic-related teaching was in fact very structured and easy to follow. Just: Most pupils were far too concernered getting out of trouble to pick up some of his teaching.

I had problems in the beginning because no vaulture in the shape of a teacher could make me be on time. And I used to bring along a bottle of IceTea to dring during class. He commented on both things very nastily severoul times (and also with consequences) but I gave him just a retort without being afraid (unfortunately I can't remember the exact wording). I had my peace and quite after that, and he even once answered a question for me.

In year 9 we had a stand-in physics teacher who was a nightmare. Once she was a substitute in Chemistry. We were having a pratical lesson and one day this lad spilled a drop of water on a desk, and becuase he had a bottle of acid in his had the teacher thought it was acid. He'd spilt the tinest, tinest drop and it hadn't done anything to the table. She banned us from any more practicals. When we were leaving she said to my friend "tell the teacher that you are never to do any more pratical lessons until that behaviour improves". We made sure to forget. Very much like Umbridge, she was, and that's what I called her. Believe it or not no one else knew who I was talking about

She was a nightmare that teacher and I'm very surprised she didn't put us all in detention.

We had a hard english teacher too. She ketp giving us really low marks, telling us we couldn't do it and stuff. I ended up getting an 'A' GCES, but only becuase I'd been doing 2 months of extra lessons with another teacher as well!! rolleyes.gif

I think that my earth science teacher in my freshman year of highschool was very very much like Hagrid. Physically, he was a rounder, mostly jolly, smiling guy. smile.gif He had a fascination with sharks and was famous for showing the film Jaws to his freshman class every year -- kinda like Hargid's fascination with the dragon-like. This teacher would also spend time with us outside of class much like Hagrid does with his students.

I think that my biology teacher, Mr. E, in my junior year of highschool was very very much like Lupin. He was stern, but fair. When we were overcome in class from being overdosed with too many biological facts, Mr. E would pass a basket of candy bars around the room smile.gif Kinda reminds me of Lupin giving Harry, Hermione, and Ron the chocolate in the beginning of Book 3 after the Dementors board the Hogwart's Express.

I have two teachers for politics- one of them is a total Mcgonagal but the other is like Professor Binns who always sends us to sleep in lessons. Plus I used to have a Religious studies teacher who was from the world of Professor Trelawney. lol.gif

Haha, yeah, and she once told us that we were all her children! Um, what? You're not my mother... lol.gif
Also, our new deputy head IS Umbridge, she's very patronising with a smile fixed in place, when you know she's plotting against you!

My old Latin teacher was like Snape, she'd shout at you if you dropped a pencil on the floor and went to pick it up! She was the Snape to my Neville.

towel.gif Oh gosh, I have a slightly watered down version of Umbridge as a maths teacher. She is all smiles until somebody does something wrong, then she goes crazy! She sent someone out for having a genuine coughing fit, and gave them a green form (goes on your permanent record, I have 2 sad.gif )!
I say she is watered down because although she is horrible, given the chance I don't think she'd make us scrape messages into our skin.

Posted by: HermioneGurlie8 Dec 11 2006, 06:29 PM

My chorus teacher is an Umbridge. She talks the way Umbridge talks, is sticky sweet to adults, and is evil to us kids. She is also a bit like Snape because she shows extreme favoritism to her favorite class and to studnets who's parents gave a lot of money to the choral department at our school. She's horrible.
On the other hand, I've got some great teachers. My history, math, and German teachers are all a bit like Lupin in the ways that they treat everyone equally and try and make sure everyone gets a chance to help and shine even when the classes are extremely hard.

I've had a female Binns...she just lectured us all day, we did the same thing, I could barely stay awake!

I don't even know this particular teacher, but...

Last Friday, our football team left early to go to state semi-finals. Many teachers and students were checking out early to head to the game, and I was going to leave after fourth period. My chemistry teacher left early and left us a note to go to another teacher's room, saying to work on homework and test packets. We go to this other teacher's room-there's nobody there yet, and the room's dark. As the regular class comes in, they proceed to ask, "Who the *explicative* are they?" and such. The teacher comes in and says we can just watch football the entire period if we're quiet. A couple of people in my class proceed to use their cell phones to light up their papers, seeing as the lights are out. She says something to them, and they tell her they're using them for light-can you please turn on the light so we can see? And she says no. The following Monday, our regular teacher tells us that she was left a note that said we were incredibly rude to the sub teacher. Yes, us Honors students were so rude and the regular ed. students were angels... conf.gif

If that's not Snape-esque, I don't know what is.

My 10th grade Advanced English teacher. He was HORRIBLE. His personal goal in life was to make mine a living hell! I couldn't even show up in his class without getting detention. He had my older brother years before, and for some reason (couldn't be because he was the jerk of the century now could it..) they completely clashed. So when I came into his class..he instantly decided I was going to be his worst enemy.

I was never as happy as I was on the last day of 10th grade..because I knew I'd never have to look into his evil face again and silently wonder if he was somehow sucking out my soul at that very moment.

I had a Snape. She was my high school Spanish teacher and she couldn't stand me. The weird thing is that the year before, when I had her for Speech, she liked me just fine. It all started in Spanish though. She was learning Spanish as she was teaching it to us and her pronunciation was a little off. But whatever, I'd had lessons at an early age and I knew the proper pronunciation rules but I didn't say anything. What bothered me was when she incorrectly identified the capital of Honduras. I raised my hand and corrected her. Well, that did it. From there on out, I was sent to the office every single day for "disrupting" class. See, I have horrible allergies. In high school, I was taking four allergy shots a week. One in each arm every Monday and every Thursday. There was one particular day I asked to move away from the AC unit because it's filter needed to be changed and I was getting sick. She sent me to the office. Another day I sneezed something like 8 times in a row (from the filthy AC unit) and I was sent out yet again. Another time I particularly remember was when someone on the opposite side of class threw a paper ball into the waste basket and she sent me out because she said I had "provoked" the other student. It got so bad that the assistant principle would see me walk in and would just tell me to sit there for 5-10 minutes, pretend like he had talked to me, and then go back. She was dreadful. And an awful Spanish teacher to boot. At least Snape knows potions. No one can deny that, but when you pronounce 'Hola! Como estas?" as " Whole - A! Koma Estays" then you seriously don't know what you're doing!

I also had an Umbridge in grade 12. I was class president and she was a class sponsor. She didn't want to do Senior Follies anymore so she tried to ban it outright. (Senior Follies is a sort of skit night where we do skits, lip syncing acts, and live music acts, all performed by members of the class. Kind of a last hoorah for the Seniors.) As it happened, we had a new principle that year, too. I went to him, told him what we planned to do, and he agreed provided he attended a dress rehearsol beforehand. Done deal. This teacher, pitched a fit. She tried everything she could to cancel the date of the show, tried to get some of the participating students suspended for that day (which means they wouldn't be able to do the show either), and then took up money at the door and refused to give it to the class! I once again had to go over her head so we could use the money to pay the sound guy. Additionally, she tried to tell all of us we couldn't wear our honor cords at graduation because it would make the students who didn't have them feel bad. SHe physically tried to remove another students honor pin and then tried to remove my band cord. I had to shove her off of me and pull her off of the other student. She went nuts! But that's ok, she got her come-uppance in life. It's not nice and I won't get into those details here. I can say, however, that I was not involved, her kharma just came back to haunt her.

Fear not there's hope! I also had a Lupin! One of our former coaches taught government and economics. He created this whole world and made everything hands-on. He called his class room AnderWorld (his last name was Anderson) and his students were AnderMen or AnderBabes. He created scenarios where we had to roleplay government workings and projects for economic problem solving. He was awesome. I was very very sad when he retired. Funnily, his crazy demeanor was also a lot like Steve Irwin. You couldn't help but get excited because he was just so passionate about teaching and learning!

Posted by: magicmaker Dec 15 2006, 11:49 AM

gracious...my maths teacher without doubt smile.gif i agree with the person above me....she is the weirdest person who will play your best mate and then all of a sudden turn around and bite you in the butt! totally as unfair, prejudiced, downright weird and ambiguous as mr snape himself........i wonder y i hate maths??!!!!! ponder.gif lol.gif

My criminal justice teacher looked and talked EXACTLY like Slughorn, it was insane. The first time I met him, I was like, "Watthehell?" It was weird, like Slughorn was teaching me. ;)

I had my very own Umbridge. She acts and looks like her! In fact, my friends and I were tempted to take a picture of her and write a resume or something and have her audition for the Umbridge part. But she's not British. Lol. She was a nasty thing. Mean because she yelled at people for nothing and then acted really sweet. Bah, glad I don't have to take a class with her ever again!

Ah, my old Geography teacher was just like Hagrid - she couldn't teach or control the class at all, but she was super sweet and caring! I always wanted to do well so she wouldn't look bad, but then I had her for GCSE (like OWLs) and sad.gif if she hadn't left after the first year I might've failed... but she was still amazing.

Posted by: PatFromSwitzerland Dec 18 2006, 07:01 AM

I had two teacher's that remind me of Harr Potter. One was a truly horrible Physics teacher. The first thing he did in our very first lesson was "lecturing" us on "the rules". The most important of those was that we had to be ready to start class with the first chime of the bell. This was, of course, simply impossible, because we had to get from one class to the other and did not know exactly when the bell would start to chime. When it started, he sent every single student away that was not sitting on his chair.

He also liked to insult people who did not know the answer to his questions in front of the whole class (things like: "I think you have got no head, they put a hot iron on your neck and it got you a bubble, instead"). He also told off everyone for all sort of things. But his classes were, to be fair on this point, very good structured and he really made an excellent job on showing us the basics of physics. But I think, this is just the same with Snape - I'm sure he, in fact, is a very good teacher but everyone is just too scared to pick it up (it was that way with my teacher).

I finally found out how to get on the "right" side of him - I just did not let him get on me, I retorted, unimpressed, everytime he wanted to insult me. It took three times then he never ever bothered me again. I was just very sorry for most of the others who suffered very much.

The other teacher I got was a plump wi... uh, woman who taught Herbology. No joking. She was a Biology teacher but gave a course in Herbology for those who were interested. I took it, and she was just like Sprout (and I became a witch, hehe).

Well, I've actually had at least one "Snape" rant from EVERY single teacher at my school.

Why?

Because, the school I go to, there's this special class, called selective. Kids all over the state go into this really competetive test to get into these classes...

Anyway, we'd come into the classroom, smiling like any other normal student. We sit down all nice like (erm come on, we're geeks) and someone's laughs.

Then the teahcer goes on "Just because you're selctive you think you're the best but guess what, you're not!"

It's just how Snape gets onto Harry about being the Boy-Who-Lived. Which is really unfair.

But the one who really reminded me of Snape was this Science Teacher (chemistry, will you believe it!). He even had the big nose and everything (but the resemblense ended there. He was short, old, skinny with a very red face and these huge huge glasses and straw coloured hair scrapped over his bald spot).

And he really seemed to like torturing me and my friends. Sure, we always smiled. But was it truly that bad?

Ahh well. There's a Snape in every life, isn't there?

We've also got a Trelawney- and Art teacher. She's got the shawls, clinky jewelery and HUGE round glasses that make her look liek a bug. And her voice! It's so dreamy and ethreal.

And a History of Magic teacher! well, ok, she actually taught us Geography, but seriously, the whole class would fall asleep. We nicknamed it sleep class- great first period on a monday, i'll tell you. And she didn't even notice us putting our heads on the desk. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. She could make volcanoes erupting and dying populations in Euthopia sound like a bee droning... How did we pass that class? We took turns to be the Hermione- you have no idea hwo hard it is to stay awake when everyone is snoring and the room is wamr and....falling asleep just thinking of it!

I had a McGonagall in Kindergarden. Then I had a slightly watered down version of Snape in the 8th grade, but i managed to get him to like me so he was tolderable. But there were kids who were really worried about passing the class. I did have a Lupin ith the 7th grade. He taught World History I think it was called... something like that. He made everything more fun and interesting. And he gave us Jolly Ranchers. He was definatly one of my favorite teachers of all time. And finally i had a Binns in the 8th grade for U. S. History. I had (unfortunately) many Snapes, but they all seemed to like me (good on one side because they gave me good marks even when I performed a little lower in the tests, bad on the other side because I didn't like them and I felt guilty about it.)
I also had one McGonagal (only he was a man!). He was also strict, but fair and very good in his lesson. Excellent teacher.

Thats like my US history teacher, only he really isn't boring. The only thing that can make the class semi-boring is the fact that it is the last class of the day on even days and sometimes (Fridays and before holidays) it can be unbearable. smile.gif

My Honors American Literature teacher is completely Dolores Umbridge. She acts like her, and even looks like her. Case in point: English is my best subject, but I have a lower grade in there than in any other class.

i have a teacher who is like a teacher in Order of the Phoenix....and its not a good one. my Computer Animation teacher is exaclty like....UMBRIDGE!~ nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!
seriously tho. she looks like umbridge and has the exact same personality as her. i hate her. i wish i could just take her to the forbidden forest like harry did, but alas, our school doesnt have one. lol.
she's verrrrrry mean to me...... whenever i ask for help, she just walks away. *note: if you're a teacher, it means you gotta teach people. NOT sit on your butt and ignore the kids who need help. UGHHH!*
so, does anyone else have teachers who remind them of someone in the Harry Potter books? type.gif welcome.gif thumbup.gif wizard.gif toast.gif

Well, I know I totally had an Umbridge for a sub. at school. She looked the part too! She was psycho and mean, but we'd get away with so much behind her back. It was a fun day when we had her.

Last year, I had a total Lupin with McGonagall/Umbridge tendencies. She was my writing teacher, and was soo soo nice. I was quite a talkative person in her class, so she would always shoot me these scary glares. We called it "The Death Stare" Towards the end of the year, our class got extremely talkative and she would basically torture us with stuff. We got really hard homework and got yelled at all the time. One of the very last days, our teachers were being particularly Umbridgeish, giving out "strikes"(i guess it's sort of like house points being taken away). I had laughed very very quietly at something and immediatly she gave me a strike. It was crazy. By the end of that class, I don't think there was one kid who hadn't gotten a strike. I do love her to death though, and probably taught me the most I've ever learned.

I have the history of magic proffesor in my faculty, i know that in the book is a phantom but, she is really like him, she just take sit and start talking and talking even she sleeped when she was showing us a video, that is true.

I had already two teachers who were definitely like Snape! They were horrible and mistreated most of my following students and me. I really hated them and they hated me! It was always disastrous to be in their classes. Luckily I'll never have them again!

Posted by: Mary Wanguard Feb 16 2007, 04:26 PM

Thankfully, I've never had a teacher like Snape.
My maths and biology teachers (both females) are very much like McGonagall: they are both strict and has very good skills in their subjects and teaching itself, however, they can smile and say funny things, if you know what I mean. biggrin.gif
I've had a history teacher who is like Binns: only murmuring all the material of the lesson.

My New Testament teacher in college was definately Snape-ish. He could even go into the characteristic poetic Snape speeches (I can teach you to bewitch the mind, etc). But now that I am a few years removed, I greatly appreciate him being hard on us. By being hard on us then, it definately made seminary easier.

I think that it is interesting that no one has mentioned having a Dumbledore. My New Testament teacher at seminary was definately my Dumbledore. She was my mentor and hero and I respected her more than any other teacher I have ever had. When she passed away a few months ago, HBP became real to me in a way I had never known. I understood for the first time what it must have been like for Harry to finally find himself without his mentor and hero.

I don't think I ever had a teacher who was like Snape, but I am student-teaching right now and my cooperating teacher would certainly qualify as a Snape. I leave in two weeks: I'm going to miss the kids soooo much, but not her. She has just been doing it too long, so she is counting down until her retirement. She never really compliments me, only focuses on the mistakes I make and never on the things I did well. I don't know, she's just the type of person you can't picture ever being carefree, not even as a child. She has her moments, but she never really lightens up that much around the kids. And I have to keep up her rules so that when I leave, the kids aren't going crazy. Frankly though, I think she could do with going easier on them. She fights almost every battle, even when it's not worth it. I pick my battles. Sometimes it is just better to ignore something, especially if you know that the student is just doing it to gain attention. I encourage the kids she has deemed as failures in life already. They're in eighth grade and she's doomed them to failure. I'm sorry, plenty of people did stupid things as kids and became successful adults because they eventually shaped up or just simply matured. She talks about how when she was their age she already knew pretty much what she wanted to do in life. How boring. And she expects them to know too! Then we have myself, who didn't decide what she wanted to do in life until four years ago - a good three years into college. Anyway, when she leaves me alone with them, the tension disappears from the room and returns when she does. My back even tenses up. I'm civil to her because it's unprofessional not to be, but I cannot wait until I am finished there. We are complete opposites.

My fourth grade teacher (I'm in 9th now) was a total Snape. She had it out for the smartest kids in the class. Not to brag or anything, but I was considered the smartest in the class. The other kids who were smart were also picked on by her. She went out of her way to make me look bad. Any writing I handed in, I got a 1 out of 4 in. One time, I finally made a flawless piece. So she gives me the 4, but then starts lecturing me on how if I worked hard, I'd always be getting 4s. Here's the worst part. In the last month of the schoolyear, my dad died from leukemia. And only then, did this teacher start being nice to me! And I just consider that really low. I've hated her for five years. Snape! snape.gif

My eighth grade math teacher was an exact replica of Umbridge. I am a math nerd, so what she was covering I already knew. Here was her lesson approach. Write a bunch of problems to do on the board (Umbridge strike 1). She sits at her desk. Everyone in the class turns to me for help (Umbridge strike 2--I'm the DA!). She goes out of her way to turn the class against me, though she fails (Umbridge strike 3). She failed. But that's 3 Umbridge strikes--she's an Umbridge. I vividly rmemeber, she marked a problem wrong on a test, making half the class fail. I got a 73. I infinity-uple checked it, had it looked over by my math tutor, former math teachers, etc. She refused to listen! She gave the option of boosting our grade if we solve all the problems "her way" (Umbridge strike 4! She is way out!). I refused to, and our animosity has been open ever since. But she still puts on that sweet air of wanting to help us, though we know it's an act (Umbridge strike 5!). What an Umbridge!

My old science teacher is definitely a cross between both Snape and Umbridge. That must be the worst teacher ever.

Posted by: HermioneGurlie8 Feb 21 2007, 03:10 PM

My chorus teacher (who I think I mentioned was an Umbride earlier) is now a cross between her and Snape. Every day, I dread going to that class, which isn't as bad as some who are actually afraid to walk into class. She picks on the people who she knows won't stand up to her and picks favorites, generally the richest or most popular people in the class. Almost half of the people in chorus are dropping out next year, including me if I don't make show chior. We've told Guidance about how horrible she is countless times, but whenever they come in to supervise, she asks them to come during 7th period (her favorite class) and she acts perfect.

My Cookery teacher was SO much like Umbridge. She even looked like her, short, squat, shrill, and always enjoyed making us suffer eg not opening to windows when all the ovens were on full blast. She's been off school for ages biggrin.gif and I saw her in town the other weekend and I felt like shouting "Umbridge" at her! So glad I'm not doing Cookery anymore.

Posted by: Aquavirius Feb 21 2007, 04:23 PM

I had a total Binns a few years ago for Grade 7 science and PDR. He was an older man with a droning and somewhat nasally voice, and he literally said 'Ok' every few words. Example: "Ok, get out your books, ok, and turn to page 74, ok, and we're learning about the Ph factor, ok, so, when it's 7, ok, it is level, ok, and when it's lower, it's acidic, ok" etc etc. He didn't learn half the kids names until late in the year. He also had a snapelike quality when he picked favorites and I was not one of them (talked too much) so when I asked a question, he would snap at me and say I should have listened, but when his favorite asked, he'd gladly tell them. He even marked his favorites way easier.

Posted by: Serious_Reader Mar 5 2007, 05:26 PM

I also recall a Professor Binns experience, but it was really sad. But then, so is Professor Binns really.

One of my very elderly professors (Natural Science) had a stroke. The school allowed him to finish the semester because he needed the extra time to get a better pension pay. The poor man couldn't even get out a complete sentence. He would lose track of what he was saying after just a few words.

I'm afraid we "tuned out" just like the Hogwarts students did with Binns. I took a book with me and read it behind my notebook.

I had an old Math teacher like McGonagall. A lot of people feared her because she was severe, but once you got to know her, she was a real softy. Had a great sense of humour too. She was one of my most favourite teachers.

As for a Snape, yes. My health teacher. He was so horrible I'm not going to go into it. sad.gif

My biology and science projects teacher during 4th, 5th and 6th years was a total Lupin. She was very intelligent and a terrific teacher too, she was always taking us outside and letting us have hands on experience. Furthermore, her hair looked like Lupin's (book Lupin), you know some grey streaks here and there.

I don't think any of my teachers were like Hogwarts Professors...they were all stark raving mad in one way or another though...maybe I was wrong, some of them probably are like a few Hogwarts teachers then! lol.gif

Posted by: bushybrownhairedknowitall May 6 2007, 05:57 PM

I had a professor in college who was so mean and awful... just like Snape tends to be. He had me in fits for the terms that I had him. I ended up being like Neville in those classes, no matter how hard I tried to be otherwise.

Then again, I've had many teachers who were like McGonagall or Lupin, and I ended up really enjoying those classes, learning a lot, and really getting along with those teachers. And, so, as a teacher now, I really try to be more like the latter two than the former one. biggrin.gif

Posted by: SnapesSister May 6 2007, 06:00 PM

Giving it more thought...I have had a couple of teachers that were like Lupin. Great teachers, and kind and sympathtic as well. Never had favourites and treated everyone in the class the same. And always had time for someone if they were stuck, or needed help.

Posted by: Dorcas~Meadowes May 6 2007, 06:16 PM

my french teacher looks exactly like McGonagall but shorter and plumper she's got a temper like umbridge though, she gave my freind a detention for feeling sick in class. two words pure evil devil.gif

my science teacher in year six (ages ten to eleven) was a bit like snape when he chosse all his favouites. he only liked people he had in his form the year before and he hated everyone else, he said that i'll be lucky if i get any question on my SATs paper right (big exams you have when your seven, eleven and fourteen years old) well stuff him, i passed and i'm going to do double science in my GCSEs.

i had another tutor who was a bit like remus lupin, he was really really cool! when these twats picked on me and i complete freaked out and walked out his lesson and refused to go back in to class he helped me out. he's one of my little brothers teachers now and he's still wicked, they swaps Dr. Who cards with each other. biggrin.gif

At a school I once taught at the students called one of the English teachers madame Hooch because she looked just like her in the movie. But on the whole I think she was more of a Lupin ... pretty fun, fair, a good teacher, and genuinely interested in the students.

It was great reading all the experiences with good/bad teachers in this thread. It somehow made me feel better that many people were victimised by their teachers for no apparent reason as I used to be.

Believe me, the person I'm talking about could give points to Snape in the art of public humiliation. Even worse, there was a Draco in my class to add fuel to the fire. I really know how Harry feels when he in potions with Snape and Malfoy. I had a McGonagall too. She used to wear specs and tie her hair in a bun like the real McGonagall. She was strict, but fair and a very good teacher. Our librarian was Madam Pince to a T. Why can't librarians be more human ?

Alas, I did not come across a Remus Lupin or even someone near him; and I really envy you lot who are lucky to have done so. The best I can say is that at least there was no Umbridge to make me write with my own blood. smile.gif

In 8th grade I had a teacher who yelled and screamed at the class with so much venom, he used to turn purple with rage. I went to a parochial school, so while he was screaming, he would wave the paddle around (what misbehavors got whacked with) and threaten everyone, yelling about how much "pleasure" it would give him to swat each and every one of us with it, and how much we all deserved it. I STILL have nightmares about that guy sometimes, and I am 39 years old! I used to come home from school everyday in tears, and I was never one who even got in trouble. I would prefer Snape's cold, quiet venom to that maniac any day! snape.gif

My new high school principal is an Umbridge. Not exactly simpery, but very heavy on rules, restrictions, etc. In fact, I saw the section in the OotP trailer when Staunton zaps up the ties of students, and it reminded me of her!! lol.gif

Posted by: Iheartprofessorsnape Jun 6 2007, 03:22 PM

My fifth grade teacher was definatly an Umbridge. I'm sort of a math nerd and when I was learning long division and multiplication I could see the answers in my head without showing much work, but I needed to show all of the steps. He would tip my desk over and go through everything to see if I had a calculator in my desk more than once. I didn't see the work that I was supposed to show so I didn't understand what I was doing wrong. So I had to miss recess and got detentions for having a messy area when it was him that made the mess in the first place. Plus I always got extra math homework that I still did wrong with the right answer and the cycle would start all over again.

I don't necessarily think that Snape is a bad teacher, because he does teach the students a lot, but I think his discipline methods need a little work. DU is an all around bad teacher who doesn't teach the students anything and treats them even worse.

yes but i probably viewed him from a hermione point of view rather than a harry... meaning he was definatly a male-organ, and i can see how someone he picked on could view him as evil, but i just saw him as annoying and often out of order.
thing is his sarcasm and rudeness was FUNNY most of the time when he wasnt directing it at students... much like snape!! happy.gif

i look back on him and laugh now that i have an adults perspective of him, but i did wish all kinds of death on him when he was responsible for my future..

we related a couple other teachers to other characters as well:
art history teacher = Mad-Eye Moody moody.gif
former geography teacher= Slughorn
US History Teacher- Nearly Headless Nick
Calculus/math teacher- Trelawney
Chem teacher- Professor Binns
Physics teacher- Bloody Baron and Snape snape.gif
tennis coach- Hagrid thHagrid03emoticon.gif

we were really bored and tried to make a list for all our teachers. it was really fun, especially since we were able to come up with so many relations.

One time in Advanced Choir in Middle School (9th Grade) we had this female teacher who was heavy and squat (like Professor Umbridge) and I guess I went to far with her and I ended up in "Detention". ohmy.gif I however ended up lucky because our regular teacher returned the next class session and said to all of us that had received detention that,"We were lucky that he was in a good mood and dropped our detentions". Posted by: Susan5124 Mar 1 2009, 01:06 AM

I remember I had 2 teachers that together were Snape. One was a Geometry teacher. She would stand outside her classroom between classes and as soon as the beel would ring for the start of class she would swipe any students laft in the hallway that were late for class. She would write complicated formulas and theorems and would "explain" be reading straight from the textbook. Then she would call on people who she knew would not know the answers and humiliate them if they didn't know the answers. The second semester I had an especially difficult time in her class and my grade was borderline pass/fail. She refused to tell me until the very last day of class whether she was going to pass me, which she did.

The second teacher that had Snape-like qualities was my Government teacher. She would do things like give you a zero if you didn't put your name on your test. She loved suspending students. If you were late you were not let in her class. She was notorious for giving impossible exams. However, there were a select few that she liked and they breezed through.

I had an Algebra II/ Trig teacher that was monotone and boring and was just like Professor Binns.

i think I've got a McGonnagal (Ms. Brinkworth or Ms. Sammon or Cassie or Maria, if you are here, its Ms.Rosasco ) funny, but lots of homework.

Shard I LOVE your avatar!! where you get?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?

I'd also like to know more about the Arthmancy teacher.... whatever his name was.....................

My Spanish teacher must be related to Professor Binns because she is just HORRIBLE. She will drone on and on, but the worst thing is that she actually thinks people listen to her! She will nod her head as if someone answered a question, when no one even spoke. Plus, the worst thing is that she is speaking in Spanish so I have to stay awake because we get graded on our translations. It is not an easy accomplishment though! Believe me!

My Grade 7 teacher was a Professor McGonagall. She was an unmarried, career teacher that wore her hair in a knot, sensible shoes and was very straight laced. She had a reputation for be tough and difficult, as it turned out she was the best teacher I ever had, she was completely dedicated to her students. She taught her class of over 40 kids well, was able to keep an orderly class that was fun and I learned more from her than anyone. Miss McCaul was a credit to her profession.

My math teacher is a total Lupin! If you have problem, he will explain it to you until you can get it. My elementary principal was a total Toad-Face. Every one hated her, including the parents.

Oh gosh, last semester when I had to take a health course, I had the WORST teacher. She was a total Umbridge. At first she seemed like she'd be nice but it was completely an act. The woman was so unreasonable and judgemental and stuck up and ugh! Everything about her screamed Toad-face to me. Plus she was the principals wife so she thought she could get away with anything. Sad too, because the principal is actually a nice guy but her... *shudders*

I had a science teacher - she couldn't be more like Umbridge (I think it might be her muggle disguise eekout.gif )
She's the only reason I didn't follow anything related to science and today I ran into her with a friend (we're both in economics) and she was like with her nice old lady - she's about 60 - face saying "are you two doing well in life? I hope you are... Of course you didn't have what it takes to go to science, but that's life, right?"
I seriously wanted to punch her with her stupid corny bag headdesk.gif

I can't put any of my teachers into a HP character but my math teacher is funny and a very good teacher. My "family and consumer science"(home EC) teacher was very Umbridge-like. She had this strict no-talking polocy that was only differed whaen we cooked. The worst part about her was that she would have to inspect every kitchen before you left and even if it was her fault you were late she would take off points! She also made it a group effort to get out the supplies you needed and to stur the batter OMG she was horrible! oh and she aould always say 'k after everything it got on everyone's nerves! She was also like "My first nine-weeks classes were tring to bend the rules 'k. So I need to be harded on the seventh graders this term 'k." That is what she said the first day! All in All she was boring and nasty! ask Potterfreak24 if you don't belive me!

Oh yeah if Mrs. Galeic if you somehow have an intrest in this take a few notes
1.be more interesting
2.be a bit more lenient
3. stop sain 'k so much!

I have an english teacher who is exactly like McGonagall. She has a way of making the class quiet without effort, and she can be strict, but most of the time is really nice. I like her a lot. smile.gif

My 8th grade Honors Biology teacher acted a lot like Snape. We even had a relationship that was similar to Harry's and Snape's. He always gave me a hard time if I didn't know something, and he was also mean to my best friends. I had him for 2 hours every day that year. I always dreaded those hours. I'm just glad that I don't have to deal with him anymore.

I've had more McGonnogals than I can count. My gym teacher is a total Hagrid. I once had a substitute who was scarily like Umbrige. One of my friends said that we had already done the assignment she was giving us, and the teacher got mad at my friend and told her to be quiet and just do the work. And my science teacher a few years ago reminded me a little of Snape. She had her favorites, which I wasn't, and if you weren't "in" with her, she got mad at you for no reason.

I had this teacher for 3rd grade and she was just like Professor Mcgonagall! She was very strict but had a sense of humor.

I had a Professor Umbridge. This woman was my English teacher and she was short dumpy and girlish, not only that but she was a tough teacher, silence was required at all times in the class room, and she loved to right you up for broken rules. She didn't have the cough, but she did have the sneeze. The first time I heard her sneeze I did not believe it was her, it was high pitched and short, it was so weird. The only difference was I learned a lot from this teacher [and Umbridge was a terrible teacher], but my friends and I called her Umbridge behind her back.

SlytherAround, your story is quite similar to mine!
I once had this substitute teacher, and she was the real annoying/feels like she has all power type.
She wouldn't let us talk, laugh, anything. And she gave out detentions for the stupidist of reasons.
Even her appearance striked to be that like ex Professor Umbridge.
Quite stuby, with the short brown hair, although i must say, she does not wear pink!

edited for grammatical error.

In 6th grade, I had a Snape-like piano teacher...and I'm not joking about her name...Sister Damien Finger. She even sounds like an HP character. She used to hit my knuckles with the metal edge of a wooden ruler when I hit the wrong key or didn't curve my fingers just right. She would also say things like "It's students like you that make being a teacher even harder." Nice nun, huh?

Long story short, after she hit my hand the umpteenth time, I grabbed the ruler, threw it into the trash can, and told her off, thus ending 8 years of piano lessons (unfortunately, she was the only teacher available at my school). Yeah, I got several demerits and detentions, but it was soooooo worth the look on her face.
