I rented a great movie last week, "Gone Baby Gone", and there is a scene where an older cop tells a young PI to "go back to reading your Harry Potter books."
This is the first time I've heard mention of our favorite cultural phenomenon in another film. Has anybody noticed any others? (film, tv, music) Because I'm sure there will be more in the future.
The only HP reference I saw was on a TV show, "Law and Order", I think. The detectives were searching an apartment for a young killer and there was an open book on his bed. The detective held it up and it was a copy of, "Deathly Hallows". It annoyed me that they chose that particular book.
Strange. Harry Potter's been a part of pop culture for years.....they're only making references to it now? Hollywood's slow......
Still, it's cool see the references.
I missed this part of the episode, but someone on this board said in the show The Office, Dwight turned his home into a bed and breakfast and was reading Deathly Hallows to one of the guests.
In 8 Simple Rules, Rory wanted a new look and came home wearing glasses. His sisters called him Harry Potter.
I've heard it on several shows....
One I can think of is 2 1/2 Men. Jake had a poster of some pretty girls on his wall (which he'd just put up after taking down his HP poster), and he put on glasses and said "hello ladies, I'm Harry Potter".
Harry has been on Saturday Night Live several times.
Vince Vaughn's character on Wedding Crashers goes into one of his rants and says something about "Harry Potter if he existed"
I didn't see the Simpson's Movie, but in the trailer Homer has his pig and says, "He's not Spider-Pig anymore. Now he's Harry Plopper!"
Oh, I know another! On Lost they discovered that Saywer was getting headaches b/c he'd been reading and needed glasses. To make the right script, Jack took 2 pairs and put them together. Saywer was wearing them, and Hurley said, "Dude, looks like someone steamrolled Harry Potter!"
Oh! I thought of another too. lol. In the DaVinci Code they are talking about the biggest selling book of all time, and one guy says, "What's this got to do with Harry Potter?" (he assumed the other man was talking about Harry Potter, but was really talking about the Bible).
In the opening credits of the movie Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, the camera pans over several pictures of Wallace and/or his dog Gromit. One shows Gromit as having graduated from Dogwarts University.

Oh yeah, [slaps forehead] "The Office" ... Michael once said, "you don't want to go to prison, because there are dementors there!" Seems like TV is way ahead of the curve when compared to the big screen.
You know, I watched The Office for years, and never saw any of these references. Are they in newer shows (missed the last season and this due to Grey's Anatomy, and by the time I got a DVR the writers went on strike!)?
There were references in Dr. Who - the Shakespeare episode - before DH was released. He tells Martha "Wait 'til you read the book, I cried!" There is also the climax of that episode, which I won't say, in case someone hasn't seen it yet.
In The Holiday, Amanda reads Chamber of Secrets on her vacation in Surrey
I love that movie!
In Epic Movie(big waste of money!!)they go to Hogwarts to learn defence
In Devil Wears Prada Andrea's(Anne Hathaway) boss Miranda (Meryl Streep) wants two copies of an unpublished http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Potter manuscript to her daughters.
On this new show, My Dad is better then your Dad, they have a trivia round and it was funny becausse their were two Harry Potter question in a row and *big shock* I got them right before the multiple choice even came up.
Yeah The Office has several Potter mentions. As mentioned the Dementors in prison and Dwight reading DH. There is also an episode where they are playing Desert Island ...
"Dwight: Question, is there firewood on the island?
Jim: I guess.
Dwight: Then I would bring an axe, no books.
Jim: It has to be a book Dwight.
Dwight: Fine. Physician’s Desk Reference…
Jim: Nice. Smart.
Dwight: …hollowed out. Inside: Waterproof matches, iodine tables, beet seeds, protein bars, NASA blanket and, in case I get bored, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. No – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. , and in the beach games episode Dwight names his team Gryffindor influencing Jim to name his Voldemort."
And there is also the beach games episode when Dwight names his team Gryffindor so Jim names his team Voldemort.
Oh and Harry also crops up in The Devil Wears Prada, Anne Hathaway's character has to get a copy of a DH manuscript before the book came out. She is successful in finding one, but it always bugged me that she was able to...hmm.
And I remember watching a Dancing with the Stars episode where one of the judges (the British one, I don't remember his name) told the contestant that when he jumped off the stage he looked like Harry Potter taking off on his Nimbus 2000.
In the movie Martian Child
Umm John Cusacks Publisher (I don't remember there characters names) says something along the lines of "I want you to write Harry freaking Potter in space!"
When I heard it, I wasn't sure whether it was a good or bad thing lol...
Tonight on October Road. Ronnie went on a rant about how he's dealing with a lot emotionally ending with "and there's no more Harry Potter books!"
On House MD (season 5, episode 17):
Kutner: "I agree with Wilson, this guy is Harry Potter. The sorting Hat was gonna put Harry in Slytherin, based on his nature he refused, so he ended up in Gryffindor. Through choice."
In yes man theres a Harry Potter party, at the bosses house.
And Harry potter posters on the wall.
Honestly those bits were the best things about the film
Tonight's "Jeopardy" had the question(answer) in the category "Comparative Lit"
"This fifth Harry Potter book is the longest in the series!"
Of course, I screamed the response at my television!
Also, I seem to remember that there was a category in "Kid's" Jeopardy "Harry Potter." A long time ago, and I remember the questions were simple. If you had seen the movies you could have gotten them.
Not mentioning Harry Potter books but "Yes Man" has a fantastic scene at a Harry Potter themed party.
I loved that part of the movie.
Jim Carrey´s boss is a very cool man, friki like me as we say here.
I wish I could be in that party.
There was another reference in Scrubs (season 7 maybe?) where JD and Turk are talking about being grown up or something and it cuts away from Turk and when it comes back he has on HP glasses and a drawn on scar and he says "Oooo, my scar!"
On Have I Got News For You (political satire programme in the Uck, has me howling most Fridays), there was a picture of one of the many resigning minister (might have been Blears?) and the presenter said "Ron Weasley's mum", to which the audence laughed...
I couldn't tell if it was being anti-HP or not, I know they have been in the past, but this seemed Ok (she had the ginger hair...). Normally, I freeze if anyone mentions HP becuase they're nearly always rude about it or make it sound silly and do it out of context....
Ok I have not seen any Harry Potter references in the movies or Television like some of you have, but when our local newspaper comes in the morning I read all the news and the comics as well.
In one particular comic that goes by the title of "Curtis", about a boy in an inner city school, his teacher Ms. Nelson who always disciplines Curtis when he is not paying attention, is acting very weird because she is dating a man and she is in love. Curtis not used to seeing this side of her comments to Chutney,(his female friend)that,"Ms. Nelson is acting so strange that she could be possessed by Lord Voldemort.
I got such a kick out of reading this recently.
I love the part in the Yes Man where he goes to the Harry Potter theme party.
I know it's not on screen, but my English teacher is constantly shouting at us that we need to revise, because we aren't Harry Potter, and therefore we won't gain the ability to magic our answers up into thin air during exams.
ahh I was gonna mention how it's in Yes Man a lot, and I've seen a lot of references in Hannah Montana (my sister watches it a lot), but people already said those.
I think it's really cool how it is getting mentioned a lot more on tv, but it better not be in a mocking way.
In Season 3 of Doctor Who Harry Potter is mentioned. Its in the third episode. Martha looks at the doctor and says "Witchcraft, that sounds very Harry Potter" the doctor smiles and says "Wait til you read book seven, I cried"
in Emma Roberrt's movie, wildchild..
she said
"what is this place? hogwarts?"
There have been a few references in Buffy, i can't reamaber them off the top of my head, but i know there are about 4 or 5 maybe.
My little sis watches Sonny with a Chance, and some girl was dressed up as a wizard and a guy walked in and said, "Sup... scary Potter..."
And, on that stupid Snuggie commercial, a girl had OotP on her bed.
In season 1 of The Bernie Mac show, I don't remember which episode, Bernie says," little Harry Potter himself...."
Watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire a few months ago, the $50,000 was "According to the Harry Potter series Nearly Headless Nick and Moaning Myrtle are both what?"
A) Ghosts
B) Warewolves
C) Mermaids
D) House Elves
The contestant answered D. and left with I think $1000
In an episode of house, Dr. House is in rehab and he refers to his nurse and security guards as Voldemort and his Death eaters.
In season one of Gilmore Girls, there's a part where the dance teacher, Miss Patty, is teaching a dance class of little girls who are walking around with books on their heads and she says "Now, walk smooth. That's the new Harry Potter on your heads. If they should drop, Harry will die, and there won't be anymore books." Haha, I found it pretty funny.
Also in season 6, I think, there's mention of Luke's daughter and her friends refering to him as Hagrid because he's "very big and very lovable" and that its a "huge compliment."
oooh! I found another one!!!!! In "Afterlife", season 1 first episode. Its breif but its here.
They are always doing Harry Potter jokes on Mock the Week, a few because Russell Howard is a fan.
Few that I can think of from the top of my head...
Things you would never hear in the house of commons: Ladies and gentlemen please welcome our newest Lord...Lord Voldemort.
Unlikely lines from the last Harry Potter book:
'Get the snitch' cried harry. 'Ok, you hold him down and i'll drill through his kneecaps' replied Ron
It was a magic mirror that showed the future and in it Harry seemed to be a 30 year old actor appearing something called 'The Bill'
I don't know why you're so upset, Harry. The real Dumbledore died 3 films ago and nobody gave a sh*t
And those are the clean ones
in alex rider when he goes down the tunnel he says "where are we hogwarts?"
my sister always thinks of me when she sees it
Ok here is the Harry Potter Doctor Who connection:
Hope you will be impressed I just edited this on the Doctor Wiki:
The Doctor had read the Harry Potter novels, and cried upon reading the ending of the final book. Martha Jones also knew the books and suggested Potter's magic word "expelliarmus" to William Shakespeare to help defeat the Carrionites. The suggestion worked.
Donna Noble jokingly referred to a centaur she met as Firenze - the name of one of the centaurs in the Potter universe (BBC Audio: Pest Control).
A copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (the first Potter novel) can be seen in a display case on Platform One. (DW: The End of the World).
Although originally consisting of seven books, there is a possibly apocryphal account suggesting that at some point several more novels in the series were written, as the Doctor had a complete set of 11 Harry Potter novels in his TARDIS.
In 2005, Russell T Davies asked Harry Potter's creator J.K. Rowling if she would write for Doctor Who. She refused, saying that she was "was amused by the suggestion but simply doesn't have the time." She was writing the sixth Harry Potter novel at the time.
In The Christmas Invasion, a Hogwarts-style uniform briefly appears as the Doctor considers what clothes to wear in his new incarnation.
The Shakespeare Code, in which The Doctor references reading the final book, was broadcast before the book was published, during a period of intense anticipation for its release. The Doctor doesn't mention the book's title, as it had not been revealed by the time the episode began filming.
According to his 2008 autobiography A Writer's Tale, Russell T Davies considered basing the 2008 Christmas special around an appearance by Rowling.
Harry Potter star, Daniel Radcliffe, was a name thrown out by Russell T. Davies to play The Eleventh Doctor.
Other actors who have appeared in the Harry Potter films who have been considered for the role of The Doctor include John Cleese and Robbie Coltrane.
In The Gallifrey Chronicles, written in 2005, a character picks up a copy of the last Harry Potter book in the TARDIS, before replacing it next to its "ten other sequels." While this can be seen as an anachronism -- possibly the author was unaware Rowling only planned to publish seven books -- it should be noted that since the publication of book 7, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Rowling has not dismissed the possibility of writing more Potter books in the future; perhaps in the Whoniverse she (or someone else) did in fact write additional volumes. It also should be noted that the title Deathly Hallows is not mentioned in The Shakespeare Code, but the Doctor refers to it as "book seven" and not "the last one". Another way of reconciling the anachronism is if you consider that there are seven books in the main narrative series, plus two books, Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which Rowling wrote for charity sale for Comic Relief, plus a short prequel that was written in 2008, the last one perhaps being a future story not yet released.
Zoë Wanamaker, who appears in The End of the World, also appeared in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, a copy of which is visible in a display case in the TV episode.
Doctor Who actors who have appeared in the Harry Potter film series:
Jim Broadbent (The Curse of Fatal Death) - Horace Slughorn
John Cleese - Nearly Headless Nick
Shirley Henderson - Moaning Myrtle
Roger Lloyd Pack - Barty Crouch Sr.
David Tennant - Barty Crouch Jr.
Zoë Wanamaker - Rolanda Hooch.
Julian Glover - Aragog (voice only)
Adrian Rawlins - James Potter
Jeff Rawle - Amos Diggory
Jim McManus - Aberforth Dumbledore
Jessica Hynes - Mafilda Hopkirk (voice only)
Chris Whittington - Ministry Wizard
John Atterbury - Phineas Nigellus
Elizabeth Spriggs - The Fat Lady (Philosopher’s Stone)
Terence Bayler - The Bloody Baron
Derek Deadman - Tom the Innkeeper (Philosopher’s Stone)
Jimmy Gardner - Ernie Prang
In the audiobooks ranging from Big Finish & the BBC itself a number of actors have used their talents. As well as David Tennant & Jessica Hynes as mentioned above who have also been involved.
Mark Williams - Arthur Weasley
Sean Biggerstaff - Oliver Wood
Leslie Philips - The Sorting Hat
Christian Coulson - Tom Riddle
Pam Ferris - Aunt Marge
Mariam Margoyles - Professor Pomona Sprout
Other references can be observed by the fact that Harry Melling who plays Dudley Dursley in Harry Potter is the grandson of Patrick Troughton. Also Alfie Enoch who is Harry’s friend and dorm-mate Dean Thomas is the Son of William Russell who plays (Ian Chesterton).
It should also be noted that Stephen Fry (Harry Potter reader for the audio books) has written an episode for Doctor Who but has not yet been put in any series due to the budget constraints of large amounts of special fx that is rumoured to be involved.
Goodness that's more than I imagined!
Just Harry Potter references???
Well, how about this- there is a character that has a Harry Potter party in a brilliant movie called Yes Man with Jim Carrey as it's star. They watch all of the HP movies that are on DVD at the time(Harry Potter 1-5) and as Jim Carry's characters leaves, the man dressed as Ronald Weasly says' Who's ready for Askaban?' He is greeted by cheers. The film is based on the book of the same name written by Danny Wallace, who also has some involvement in the making of the film. By the way, I am not sure whether or not that is the line the character says for definite, but it is something Harry Potter related.
In the new Tranformers Sam's mom says she feels like she's at Hogwarts when they are dropping him off at his dorms. You often here reference to Harry Potter in The Simpsons and just the other night on American Dad Roger was portraying a college professor and he got mad at a student and said "50 points from Gryffindor." At which point my husband turns to me and say "God I can't get away from it anywhere can I?" I laughed and said "Sorry honey, but no."
Well if anyone has watched a crime drama series on BBC1 recently called New Tricks you'll have noticed that they have had three HP actors guest star in three consecutive episodes, Mark Williams (Arthur Weasley), Georgina Leonidas (Katie Bell in HBP) and David Thewlis (Remus Lupin).
 Also in the movie Funny People they also mention harry potter when is when one of the guys says when is harry getting a PH.D in wizardry (:
Doctor Who has the most..
Wow! Some of these are quite funny. Loving the Gromit graduating from 'Dogwarts' one and Lord Voldemort as a peer and member of the House of Lords (Mock the Week - I'm sure that Frankie Boyle came up with many of the 'unclean' ones, lol!). And I saw that episode of Doctor Who where a certain spell came in very handy for the Doctor, Martha and William Shakespeare.
SO MANY REFERENCES... just another thing to remind us all, happily, that Harry Potter is a full-fledged pop culture phenomenon. i love it.
I'm watching Jeeves and Wooster now on ITV3 and Bertie Wooster's (played by Hugh Laurie) uncle is called Lord Yaxley LOL. And Stephen Fry is in it of course!
Did anyone mention House yet? Harry gets a shout out in a diagnosis (0)-(0) weird.
I was watching My Family earlier and it was a Halloween special and in the episode Susan (Zoe Wanamaker - Madam Hooch) was dressed up as a witch and her husband remarked something along the lines of "If you don't leave me alone, I'll shove that Nimbus 2000 up your backside", made me laugh.
There is a reference from Scrubs that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet. There is an episode where Dr. Kelso is reading DH and he snaps at everyone not to reveal anything. If he/she does he draws Harry Potter glasses and scar on his/her face.
In ABC Family's new show 10 Things I Hate About You, it's the Stratford sister's first day at their new school, and this guy sees Bianca and immediatly has a crush on her. He's talking to his one friend and says, "I don't have much time before her social status is determined. It's like she's about to reach inside the Sorting Hat at Hogwarts."
A few moments later Bianca is sitting with the evil girl on the show and he goes, "Too late, Voldemort's got her."
In the movie 17 Again there are many refrences to the cloak of invisibility
It's a book reference, not a movie one, but in The Da Vinci there is a scene where the main character is talking about the holy grail and says it is mentioned in the bestselling book ever and his editor says 'Don't tell me that Harry Potter is about the holy grail!' and he responds 'I was talking about the bible' lol
Shooting Stars is back, and JK Rowling was mentioned as the answer to a question as to who was the most popular author in Japan?
In the movie 'The Devil Wears Prada' there's a few sences about getting the next HP book.
Also in 'Doogle' <I think that's what its called, but they make a reference about Hogwarts, but I haven't seen the movie in a long time.
~WR's
In the Mary Kate and Ashley movie "Winning London", Mary Kate and Ashley go to a club for men only so they dress up like guys and one of the men asks one of the girls who they are and she says "Lord...Voldemort"
in yes man they go to a harry potter party. do books count? in the book Eternal they say something like "what are you? wizard, warlock ,Hogwarts grad?" and in the book Need one of the characters cant remember if dementors are from Stephen King or Harry Potter.
In the film "17 Again" there is a flashback scene and the nerdy character says something about a Hippogriff, referencing to Harry Potter, however this flashback was of 1989 apparently so the character couldn't have known about Harry Potter yet as it wasn't invented.
Ive been watching 'Theatreland', which is chronicling the production of 'Waiting for Godot' at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London; It follows the progress of cast and crew, front of house and backstage workers etc. throughout the productions run in the West End. In one episode two handymen(one was possibly a carpenter, I can't quite remember...) were looking for a leak in the building and passed the theatre's "secret door", which the carpenter guy refers to as "the harry potter door". The reason being (according to him) that it's the 'real' entrance to Diagon Alley as there is a brick wall built within it(I'm assuming it just reminds him of the entrance at the back of the leaky cauldron, rather than his genuinely believing he's within inches of the wizarding world as he searches for plumbing defects at the Theatre Royal Haymarket
)
I just saw one while I was watching Gossip Girl. Serena was trying to get Blair into Yale and the Dean's friend said that her daughter didn't need company "as long as [she] had Harry Potter"
