Harry Potter discussion forum for movies, books, and more! - The Leaky Lounge _ Leaky Fan Art Gallery Forum _ Which Characters Do You Most Like To Draw/See?

Posted by: Tom Scribble Feb 19 2007, 07:20 PM

I couldn't see any thread to the poll that's on the fanart home page, and since I voted for the last answer ("None of the above, so I'm going to leaky Lounge to Post About it"), I'm starting a thread.

My answer would have been that I'm more interested in scenes than specific characters. I do draw the occasional portrait, but even then I like to embed the portrait in scenery from the books. I have no favourite characters that I prefer to draw - the things that make up a picture for me are setting those characters in visula relation to each other, together with scenery and lighting, to create the atmosphere, and - if I'm able - even part of the narrative.

Those are also the things that interest me most when looking at fan art. I like comparing all the different ways fanartists have come up with to interpret one particular scene.

I agree with this statement. I am not a fanartist, but a fan art fan... (does that make sense) and one of my favorite scenes to see is the "and then he kissed her" scene with Harry and Ginny after the last quidditch match. I love that scene, and each different artist brings something different to that scene. That has to be one of my favorite scenes in cannon.

My favorite character to see drawn is Ginny Weasley. This is probably because Ginny Weasley is my favorite character. I love to see each artists take on her. Each artist seems to capture a different part of her personality in their drawings, which i love to see. Also each artists different style leads to different versions of her.

Great idea for a thread!

I'll add a resounding, Agreed! to seeing the characters portrayed in scenes, rather than portraits.

Seeing the reaction of the character to his/her surroundings, other characters... those character's reactions to him/her... the fan artists give us such insight to the characters.

I'm torn about whether I prefer the scenes depicted from canon or from possible backstory... ponder.gif

Posted by: luna_lupin7 Feb 20 2007, 04:17 PM

I actually have to disagree. I prefer to see portraits. It's probably because I'm really into drawing portraits, so I like to see how others make them.
My favorite character to see drawn is probably Ginny or Bella, because fanartists don't seem to be too tainted by the movie versions of them. I'm not sure why a lot of fans haven't taken a liking to Bonnie Wright, but they just haven't. And Bella hasn't really been given a chance to be changed yet.

And Bella hasn't really been given a chance to be changed yet.

This is one thing I like about fan art--other people's interpretations of the characters. They are all in my imagination still, just as I first saw them. Watching the movies or listening to the audio books or seeing a visual interpretation of them doesn't detract from the way I see them in my mind's eye.

In terms of portraits or scenes, I'd choose scenes as well. (The only thing I can draw are stick figures, and all of my lines are crooked.)

Posted by: glockgal Feb 21 2007, 12:12 AM

I am all about the scene rather than a portrait. I just find it really rare to find a portrait that successfully encapsulates a character's personality, unless of course the character in the portrait is doing something. That said, I have seen some portraits that do seem alive and full of character, and buy do I admire them! Sadly, other portraits sometimes strike me as, like, Sears portrait photographs - forced pose, forced stare, forced smile, etc.

Ironically, the portraits in HP canon (ie, the paintings and pictures in the HP books) are constantly moving and conveying their personalities, hey?

But I digress! Easily the character I draw the most is Harry, which is no surprise since the books are named after and follow his PoV. Plus, I'm a sucker for the runty, black-haired, bespectacled boy protagonists, hehe. But I do love drawing the Trio interacting, and the Weasleys because there's always more than one of them!

Posted by: CanineStar_SiriusBlack Feb 21 2007, 10:39 AM

I personally prefer drawing portraits, because I don't like drawing backgrounds (and is no good at, either). but I do scenes sometimes, too.

I personally love drawing Sirius. since my image of him has always somewhat a long-haired Bishi, I get to play around with doggie's hair as opposed to if he had short hair.

Posted by: I enjoy Acid Pops Feb 24 2007, 11:13 AM

Yeah, I agree with that. I can't do backgrounds without the urge to tear my art to shreds and start over. So my stuff is generally boring in that area. I really do appreicate the artists who do scenes, though. Most of them are amazing.
I'd have to say that Ginny and Hermione are my favorites to see portrayed. People have such different views of them. tongue.gif

Posted by: Hagiographer13 Feb 25 2007, 05:48 PM

I love to see scenes, since they fit more in my mind's eye vision of the Potterverse. But, I am also a big fan of portraits, since they allow for a more in-depth look at the character.

Perhaps some of my favourite FanArt involves images of the Marauders, as they are the least-likely to be affected by the films' ideas, and are so very diverse.

This one by http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/fanart/picture/view/724 is wonderfully character-driven--

IPB Image

By seeing where the Marauders may have been, it makes it that more intriguing and poignant to know where they are going . . . cry.gif

Posted by: HPluvr13 Feb 27 2007, 06:42 PM

I'm not an artist...just a fanart fan! But I usually like to see scenes painted because it's interesting to see how different people viewed different parts of the books. (although I like portraits too) I like drawings of all the characters but I especially like the marauders, probably because they haven't been viewed yet in the movies.

Posted by: MonieLou Feb 27 2007, 07:05 PM

I'd like to see Ron, portrait or scene doesn't really matter. He's my favorite character, but people don't really draw much fanart of him. And if they do, it's of Rupert Grint. I love Rupert and all, but he's not my-Ron. I'd like to see how other people see Ron.

Well, I couldn't draw/paint/photoshop/whatever if my life depended on it, but my favorite pics to look at are often those of the trio. They tend to be closer to canon than the movie actors are - not always, but a lot of the time, and sometimes they show moments that either aren't in the movies or haven't been filmed yet and it's cool to see images of things that happened in, say, HBP.

I also really like Dumbledore drawings - a lot of artists have really got excellent Dumbledore pics, like rnlaing's picture below - it's a cool sketch of Dumbledore battling someone in all of his awesomeness:

I'd like some Rufus Scrimgeour art. I've done one myself, but seeing as I can't work a scanner, I can't be a fanartist. *sigh* Scrimgeour is fairly underrepresented in the fanart galleries and I'd like to see more of him, and other characters that haven't yet been featured in the films.

I just did one and uploaded it to the leaky art gallery... which I just joined. Dumbledore's my favorite character so I love any good Sumbledore art (like the one above. And I love Fawkes art too. I'm trying to find a good one of Fawkes so I can get it tattooed. biggrin.gif

Strix that is excellent! He looks perfect right down to the half moon glasses!!! That is really great!

I love to see Luna drawn, simply because she is my favourite character. I love seeing how different people view her and how their imagination differs to my own.

I would say he looks more like an old Jaguar - but I don't remember at what point he ate Fawks in the books... or is that a different bird he's eating? But it is indeed a fantastic picture.

LOL lol.gif , that is one of the funniest comments I've ever read here on the Lounge!!!

Rufus Scrimgeour is an interesting one as Jo gave us such a detailed description of him for a fairly peripheral character. I like to see artwork of these kind of characters. Bill and Charlie Weasley artwork interests me as well.

I'd actually like to see more pictures of DD's funeral. I've only seen about three, and it's disappointing because that is such a moving part of HBP. Oh! And when Snape kills DD. I've only seen one of those that really, truly looked like I pictured it.

Yeah, I'd also like to see more of DD's funeral. I don't get to see that many. I've noticed I most look at the Bellatrix pictures. She's my favorite evil character, and I like to see how people portray her.

It is a great picture... But, somehow, I had imagined Scrimgeour as being black. So, alas, this doesn't correspond to "my" Scrimgeour at all!

I would definitely like to see the Ministers' meeting at the beginning of HBP being depicted.

I realized something the other day. I have never seen a picture of the DD/LV duel in the MoM. Never. Not one. And for us to call ourselves Potter fans, there has to be at least one out there! But I think those who are capable (myself sadly excluded) should draw this scene like maniacs. lol.gif

My favorite pics are of Lucius Malfoy. tongue.gif Can't get enough of that long-haired, well-groomed, arrogant man!

Some of my favs are done by Makani. Esp. her non-cannon pics. She has a interesting insight on how the Malfoys might be at home.

I absolutely love that picture with Narcissa and Draco, thats one of the best yet ... of course Lucius is in there too but it is superb. I love to see pictures of the sisters black, especially Bella, for some reason I am intrinsically drawn to pictures of her ... not a clue why lol apart from the fact that she may be one of my fav characters other than that no idea lol

Posted by: MercuricAcid Jun 16 2007, 03:23 PM

Hm...I'd have to say I like seeing different pictures of Hermione...the different ways people can interpret bushy hair and a bossy attitude really amazes me...in a good way.

I try and stay away from ships...and although I used to be Harry/Hermione...(that was before I joined this site)...I also like pics of just the trio being...friends. Harry and Hermione together too (as friends).

In the sense of drawing...Harry and Hermione probably. Maybe because I can draw them better than any other character. Heh...that's laziness for you.

The magical creatures too...especially winged horses. I'll have to upload some of those pics that I have sitting around on my hard drive collecting dust.

Posted by: SulkySkrewt Jun 21 2007, 04:22 AM

I love drawing and painting Mad Eye Moody. There's so much to work with. It's great to see different interpretations of him. I also have a soft spot for Tonks and of course Snape.

There are a few characters however, that I have trouble visualising: Lupin and Sirius are two that stand out. I love Lupin but I'm always stuck with how to interpret him in my work. Hey hum.

I love to draw horses, too. They're such beautiful creatures. I'm currently working on a painting which shows Snape and Harry on two rearing horses (Black and white knights) on a giant (wizards) chess set. Whether I'll ever finish it is something that remains to be seen. I realize that maybe knights aren't the best pieces for these two characters, but I really wanted to draw horses, so there! tongue.gif

I've seen a couple of amazing pictures back in the days when the Gallery was up, of Thestrals. I think this is the beauty of HP art (actually any art) is that people will have their own mental descriptions of characters and creatures and I love to see whats roaming around in other artists' minds. biggrin.gif

I love drawing Hermione and Ginny's hair, there's just something about mad curliness and bright redness that I love! biggrin.gif I also like drawing Luna and Dumbledore smile.gif Drawing Ron annoys me because for some reason I can't get him down on paper properly, although I try!

All praise to all the artists--so many touching/funny/nostalgic moments, browsing through.

What I keep looking for, though, is some depiction of Harry as he appears as of "Malfoy Manor" in DH. We're specifically told his hair is down to his shoulders, plus that he has--5 o'clock (+) shadow. I'm pretty sure he shaved once they made it to Shell Cottage, but he would still have been looking the same while digging Dobby's grave, while talking to Bill/Griphook/Ollivander, when talking to Ron and Hermione in the garden while seeing Voldemort taking the Elder Wand from Dumbledore's tomb. Plus, just personally, I pretty much pictured him with the hair from then on: not only have we known how cool he thought Bill and his hair were from GOF on, all his "father figures," male role models--Dumbledore, Remus, Sirius--have had long hair. None of the actual book art picked this up and ran with it, I guess playing it safe & keeping Harry recognizable--but I still think it's been a missed change in appearance that mirrors the "coming of age" in the story itself.

Perhaps I'd have to be biased, considering that I actually am the wizard rock artist Snape Plays Guitar, but I like anything that shows a Snape/Lily scene, or any scene with Snape from the books. Aside from that, I like to see dynamic group shots. The Marauders are best for this, though I have seen a very good sketch of the trio in their first year.

There aren't enough action scenes. There are a lot of scenes of just the character doing something, but not a lot of, say, duel or quidditch scenes. I have yet to see a very well done Harry/Draco bathroom scene.

And boy, I used the word scene a lot.
Wish I could draw.

We now have a new poll about this very question on the http://fanart.the-leaky-cauldron.org/. Go on over and vote--and check out all the wonderful new art while you're at it! smile.gif

Posted by: PiaSharn Oct 3 2007, 02:25 PM

As to the poll, I voted for "Other". It's the adult characters that fascinate me the most (the mauraders in particular) and are thus the ones that I often try to draw and look for when browsing artwork.

Although it's a bit of a tricky question, since the characters I love to see are not always the characters I love to draw, and vice versa.

I adore Remus, so I'm always on the hunt for new art featuring him. (Although I don't always agree with the artists' interpretations of him, but that's another subject.) Drawing him, though... Heh... Don't get me wrong, I'd love to do more art of him, but I have the toughest time getting him to look right. (It doesn't help that the books are vague at best on his appearance.) I'm getting better at it, but it's often frustrating. So drawing art of Remus is not always as fun as looking at art of him.

Dude, if more people would draw the Malfoys, I wouldn't have to so much! xD Do it for me! xDD

Posted by: LiamFuller Nov 19 2007, 11:19 AM

Hermione, Bellatrix, Dean, Seamus, Luna and Neville. I hate drawing Harry though, I always always get it wrong. Not on first look but glasses, scar and hair never quite live up to my expectations. For an art assignment I drew Luna's ear (strange) and part of her hair, it had the raddish earring. I got a level 7C (7A being highest) so I'm pleased with that, I might go back and draw the rest of her side view, but it might lower the grade.

Right now *as I type* I have Dean and Seamus in my hands drawing. huh.gif "It was Luna and Dean. Seamus gave a great roar of delight and ran to hug his best friend."

I love to look at marauder art even if it too often doesn't fit in my definition of good. But when it does, I enjoy it!
I want to draw the marauders, but they rarely turn out as I want them to, ecpecially when I draw them together, so I mostly have drawings of other characters

I'm a fanartist of sorts... I started out on Harry Potter a while ago (started drawing two years ago), but I'm not really up to the best standard I could be. However, I'm a sucker for fanart.

My favourite artist is Makani, I just love the way she interprets everything. It's so professional and it's pretty easy for beginners to envy her.

But I love seeing all the characters in fanart, really, it's really fun to just explore websites in search for illustrations of Harry Potter characters in the way other people interpret them.

So it's hard to think... The characters I most like to draw are probably the Malfoys, the LeStranges, Voldemort, the Marauders, Snape and Lily. And the characters I most like to see drawn are Luna, Neville, Bellatrix and Sirius.

(Also, the pictures above are awesome! biggrin.gif)

I'm really biased toward drawing MWPP era events. I think because there's so little definition about what the people of that generation did, what their exploits were etc that I feel a bit more artistically free than I do with the current Hogwarts kids.

Also, there's always that knwoledge of what happens that hangs over MWPP generation art. No matter how happy or cuddly it is, there's always this bit of sadness to it because beyond a doubt, it won't last.

As far as current generation of Hogwarts students go, mmmmm I don't really have anyone that I draw a lot of cnosistently I don't think, but I really enjoy Neville and Luna and keep meaning to do more fanart for the two of them.

As far as what I like to see, well MWPP obviously, and art where it really is the four of 'em. It bugs me when people don't include Peter just because. If there's a narrative reason he's not their in the picture, that's ok, but if he's just not their, I'm not fond of that because IMO, it kinda . . . I don't know . . . misses the point somehow?

I also really like James/Lily fanart. Glockgal did a wonderful (but adult) picture of the two of them that I adore. I'd really like to see a lot more Lily art. She just such a mother figure in the book and not much beyond that, I'd love to see more of her, which luckily, has happened ince her past with Snape came out. ^__^

But in general, I'm good with art of any character, though Iv'e come to prefer gen art over couples art. Gena rt tend sto have more of a variety of themes and looks and such than couples art does I guess, or maybe I just burned ut on it after so many years!

LL member Hito as done some fantastic Hermione fan art. It's some of my favorite to look at, for sure, it's really well done. I like to draw fan art of Fleur cuz I can draw her all flowing and 'angel' like. happy.gif

I absolutley adore drawing Tonks and Luna because both of them have very distinct styles that are interesting.

Makani, you are the Malfoy Queen. You draw the best Malfoys in the world. (I wish they would cast your Narcissa in the movies...) If other people drew them for you, we wouldn't get to revel in your luscious Lucius and company, now would we?

(I'm gonna go all fangirly and say your drawings are the best thing ever. OK, I'll stop now).

Cheers biggrin.gif

I can't draw to save my life, so I won't even attempt any fanart.

The canon pictures I like to see most are of the Marauders, Hermione/Ron, any (or all!) of the Weasleys, and Remus/Tonks.

As for non-canon (fanon I think you all it?) I'd like to see more Percy/Hermione. If Hermione was going to be with any Weasley other than Ron, it would most certainly be Percy, and I think they're a fantastic pairing.

Also, while I'm here, does anyone on here do requests?

I take requests into consideration. It's why I lnjoyed all the art exchanges I did on LJ this year.
I got assigned a prompt/request asking for young Black Sisters and Sirius, which was somethign I'd enver considered before but it was one of the mos tfun things I've drawn.
Gehayi also told me a story about Zombie Sirius adn how she'd love to see that take on his ressurection, which also inspired fanart. Sometimes other people jus have cool ideas I'd enver ahve thought of.

So I mean kinda. If soemone puts somethign out there and it inspires something, I may draw some art inspired by it (same with fanfics).

But for a specific request that is "would you draw A, B, C, exactly as I want it" outside of an exchange thing, I usually only do on commission

artist.gif <--- AH!!! That's so cute *must use*

I really really really like to draw Ron and Hermione. I just haven't uploaded any work yet. Mainly caus I can't draw anything that conveys the emotions I want it to. I really freaking wish I could draw emotion like Makani. =D lol...i spend like half of my free time (wait...what free time) on AccioBrain just like studying the fanart 101s and stuff to try to understand how to draw emotions. Ron/Hermione are likeee perfectttt to me, mainly caus I'm so exactly like Hermione (aside from her studying habits) that it really makes me wish I had a Ron. lol. I'm 14. I've got time.

I really like looking at any fan art, but I really really like fan art of the trio, Remus, Tonks, and Dumbledore the best. I love to see how each artist differently interprets the characters with how they see them in the books. I wish I could draw, because I would draw SO much fan art!!! Lucky talented people!!

I am a fan of the love stories between the characters, so i hava an inclination for female potraits and somo love scenes. I am officially in love of ron so most of my drawings have him in.

my greatest wishes for al harry potter fans!

I've only sketched one Harry Potter themed picture, a group portrait of the younger Black first cousins before Sirius ran away. I drew Bellatix and Andromeda as looking very alike. I thought at the time (before the BFT) Narcissa was younger than Sirius but older than Regulus, so Regulus is lying on Narcissa's lap and Sirius is resting against Andromeda's knee and defiantly wearing a Muggle t-shirt and jeans.

My favorite at has been of the Marauders, as they are as a group, my favorite characters.

My favorite character is Harry, but I've never been tempted to draw him.

I'm not an artist myself, but I truly love looking at others' work. I greatly appreciate seeing what artists come up with from just reading something out of the books. I love to see art that has to do with the future of the characters. I also enjoy seeing art that pokes fun at that characters. I really love Makani's work. Sarcasm is just awesome.

Posted by: mrs. bianca snape Apr 10 2008, 02:53 PM

first off, makani, your awesomeness inspired me to start trying my own fan art. unfortunatly, try as i might, i just cant draw like you. which is ok, good even because it gives us variety. i love your simple lines that express emotion so effortlessly!

when it comes to drawing, i like to draw tonks. She reminds me of myself (pink hair an all) so shes a character i relate to and drawing her usually just takes a few quirks on the image i see in the mirror!

I LOVE to see picture of snape. especially ones where hes attractive and menacing. hit on the menacing. something about fictional curmudgeons always gets me all worked up...

Rather then see scenes from the book illustrated i enjoy seeing "behind the scenes" pictures. things like Mekani's malfoys at home...stuff that wasn't described necessarily but that readers can infer and create with the characters. Thats why i am also an avid reader of fan fiction...i like to see people take the cannon characters and run away with them! smile.gif

oh yeah- and lockhart.

I agree that it's lots of fun both for the artists and the viewers to do the "next gen" characters, since they are truly a "blank slate" with a minimum of canon-clues. One picture I really like featuring the new kids is this by Miss Ida showing Uncle/Dad Harry regaling them with stories of his adventures (quite a few to be getting on with lol.gif) --

My favorite fan art pictures would have to be the marauders. especially Remus he's my alltime favorite character! I also like pictures of Remus and Tonks. they are perfect together.

Any picture with Remus. In my apinion, best character in all the books.
HE DIDN,T DIE! I REFUSE TO ACCEPT IT! sorry, can't help it. sad.gif wolf.gif

I actually like looking at everything, even pieces of the story, like characters I don't care for, that aren't really of interest to me. The fan artists we have here on Leaky just know how to make everything so wonderful to look at.

I think my favorites are pictures of Ron. I like seeing Ron with Hermione and Ron with his family (either his siblings/parents or his kids). Of course, it's all because Ron's my favorite character (bet you didn't know that!).

I like to see pictures of the different creatures and dark characters that follow in the later films.
Like Bellatrix Lestrange for answering the call when part of the prison on her and a few others side was destroyed. Peter Pettigrew provided some help in bringing Voldemort back to full strenght.
Barty Crouch Jr, known for being a nice boy, but went evil and ended up returning to Azkaban.
Draco and Lucius Malfoy, doing a job that not every faithful servant would do for Voldemort.

I most like to see Hermione,Ginny and Luna. Most of the Snape drawings I've seen seem to be very good too. I also like it when I see minor characters, who haven't been attempted as much.

One thing that keeps puzzling me though, is the contrast between how people draw Ginny's hair: it's either really short or really long. Would anyone like to say why they drew/interpretted it like this? Just wondering. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Azkaban's_Angel Jan 6 2009, 02:27 PM

I pretty much love seeing any well worked fanart but I would have to say I favour Dumbledore depictions. To quote Phineas Nigellus He's got style! I always love how people depict his clothes, it is one of the great flaws of the HP films IMO that DD isn't better dressed. There was no shortage of descriptions of his attire from Jo, right from the first chapter of PS, yet the movies have always failed to match up dry.gif

Posted by: Bookworm_Weasley Jan 6 2009, 10:47 PM

I also love to see anything anyone has to offer. I can't draw to save my life, even my stickmen are laughable, so it's a joy to see so many other people bringing the series to life in their own way.

I would love to see more pictures of Percy Weasley, but I wish people would stop depicting him as the "ugliest Weasley" (this isn't directed to anyone on here, I don't actually remember seeing any pictures of Percy on here). Every single one of the Weasley boys is handsome, so I'd love to finally see someone draw Percy as handsome as the rest. Percy is literally my dream man, he's a handsome geek wink.gif

Other than that, I love to see scenes drawn out. What I would absolutely love is if we could have each and every book drawn out scene by scene (by all different artists of course, that would be a HUGE task for one person! huh.gif ) but then, I am asking a lot! blush.gif

I agree, Bookworm_Weasley: I think Percy is often depicted in a less-than-favourable way due to his character flaws. However, there are some very nice depictions of this most-complex of the Weasley sons, one of my favourite is this one by the incredibly talented Lisa Rourke --

You can find it http://fanart.the-leaky-cauldron.org/picture/view/1204 in the TLC FanArt Gallery. smile.gif

I love seeing the marauders, especially when they include a Peter who's still young and hasn't betrayed anyone yet, Remus who is a little less ragged, James who - let's face it = isn't dead yet, and Sirius who hasn't yet been affected by Azkaban.

Oh I agree! I hate when people leave Peter out of the young Marauders group (in art or in fanfiction) just because he grows up to betray them. We all know he grew up to be a terrible person, but he was their friend when he was young so he should be with them.

I also love seeing the Malfoys.

I love to draw the weasleys, they're just my favourite family in the entire world. You can draw so many different expressions with them, and i love seeing the weasley twins (both alive and together of course hug.gif ) or charlie and bill, especially since the films dont even include them! I love any drawings of people having fun at Hogwarts, wether its the trio or the 'complete' marauders or minor characters. Definately agree about Regulus though, i really like him as a character who was as brave as Snape in the end but even more alone and sadly pretty much forgotten.

Posted by: Werewolves Rule Aug 27 2009, 07:11 PM

I like seeing the same pictures as the same fanfiction I like to read, otherwords the Marauders and Next Genaration. I love the Marauders, especially Remus, he's one of the best characters. And with Next Genaration, I just like seeing how other people imagened them, its so interesting seeing them.

I know that it sounds weird, but I'm sure many other people feel the same with reading fanfiction and looking at fanart that's the same.
