Harry Potter discussion forum for movies, books, and more! - The Leaky Lounge _ Non HP Book Club: The Hobbit _ Lets Vote for What to Read Next

Posted by: Dreamteam Jun 18 2008, 07:01 AM

Well I think we now have a long enough list to start voting.

We've already agreed that the next book we read will be The Amber Spyglass, which we'll start reading on 12 July and ends our first series, so the first part of the poll is to decide which individual book we should read after that, starting on 9 August.

The second part of the poll is to vote on which series we should read next, that will begin on 6 September and will be read during alternate months - there will be later polls to choose the individual books to be read in between.

For an individual book I chose "Sense and Sensibility" because I haven't read this book in ages and I love Jane Austen wink.gif

For a series, I chose Lord of The Rings simply because I have always wanted to read these books and it would be nice to follow up with the discussions from "The Hobbit".

However; "To Kill a Mockingbird" sounds like a wonderful choice too smile.gif

I chose "To Kill a Mockingbird", have never read it but would love to. It has always appealed to me i just never got round to it, it appeals to me more so though than the others.
And then i chose the chronicles of Narnia, iv seen the first film ad i really liked that. and iv always believed that the books are better than films so i would like to see the comparison.

Ditto. I voted the exact same choices, although I've never read Sense and Sensibility. I have read LOTR and it would be cool to follow Bilbo & the other Hobbits adventures through the rest of the books.

In the end I chose 'To Kill a Mockingbird', as I absolutely love that book, though I'm also eager to read 'Ballet Shoes' and 'I Capture the Castle'. For a series, I picked The Chronicles of Narnia.

I went with Sense and Sensibility because I've always liked the book and it has been several years since I read it. smile.gif To Kill a Mockingbird is also a great book, I've just read it more recently. read.gif

For series, I went with Narnia because I like CS Lewis, I wasn't all that crazy about The Lord of the Rings, and we just did a Philip Pullman series. tongue.gif

I chose To Kill a Mockingbird because it's the only one of the books with which I'm even vaguely familiar. I've seen the movie, which was quite good, and therefore it is on my "to read" list.

For Series I chose Narnia as I'm currently reading through that series and am just about to start book 7.

It looks to me as if the vote is basically no contest!

They are all good choices though. Personally, I prefer LOTR over Narnia as literature, but Narnia is still a lot of fun.

I have really enjoyed re-reading The Hobbit. There are all kinds of things I had forgotten.

I voted for LOTR as the series to read, because, well, just I like it a lot grin.gif

And as for the separate book I think (can't remember for sure lol.gif ) I picked "Sense and Sensibility" - I haven't read any Austen and I'm thinking this could be a good, well, reason to read something she wrote biggrin.gif

Do you consider The Hobbit a book in its own right, separate from the Lord of the Rings series, or a prequel of that series? For the individual book I think it is about time we did I capture the castle, a book that has been mentioned a lot previously, and if you don't want to continue on from the Hobbit with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I'd like to do the Narnia series, especially as Prince Caspian is still screening. The question is, which book would you start it with? Magician's Nephew or the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe?

The Hobbit is both--it stands alone quite nicely but the others are also built from it. In many ways it is like HP Book One.

The decision about the order to cover Narnia is interesting--should we follow the order in which they were written or the order of the storyline. Disney seems to be following the order of publication:
Lion, Witch, Wardrobe -1951
Caspian '51
Dawn Treader '52
Silver Chair '53
Horse and Boy '54
Magician's Nephew '55
Last Battle '56
The Storyline however is
Magician's Nephew
Lion, Witch, Wardrobe
Horse and Boy
Caspian
Dawn Treader
Silver Chair
Last Battle
Interesting that both the beginning and ending should have been written last (seems to suggest that unlike JKR, Lewis had not conceived of an entire, coherent storyline before beginning. I believe something similar is true of Tolkien; I think when he wrote the Hobbit he had not considered the rest.

So, our decision is probably going to be to follow one of the two orders above--or make up our own order.

The Hobbit is not part of the LOTR trilogy (fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, Return of the King). It's described as a prelude to LOTR. I'm not sure what the difference is between a prelude and a prequel though. Maybe a prequel is written after the series but based before the series, & a prelude is based and written before the main series like The Hobbit was. unsure.gif

As the Narnia books seem to be in front in the poll I've moved over from a previous book club a
poll we ran on the order for reading the books. You can find that poll http://www.leakylounge.com/Reading-Narnia-Chronicle-t60748.html&pid=1584144#entry1584144.

Just to let everyone know that I think we'll close this thread on Saturday 28 June which gives us six weeks to read the chosen book which is looking very much like To Kill a Mockingbird as that's way out in front right now. In ten weeks time we'll begin the next series and that's looking like the Narnia books. If you haven't voted go up to the top of this thread and make your choices.

Well I voted for Sense and Sensibility but it doesnt look too likely to win this time. So, I have bought To Kill A Mockingbird and have just started reading it.
