It's a good start, but you seem to have mixed up the Houses a bit. Perhaps you should re-read clue 1 and make certain you squeeze out all information from it?

As for the gender question on Aisling, let's look closer at clue 5.
"Aisling, who isn't in Slytherin, is secretly in love with the Reel dancer. She didn’t Charm any Shamrocks." So she's a girl. smile.gif

I think I've finally got the Battle of Hogwarts puzzle! I gotta say, this one was the toughest by far.

Peggy fought inside Hogwarts using Incarcerous, was a 7th year Hufflepuff pureblood, and lost her boyfriend.
Jenny fought in the Gryffindor Tower using Impedimenta, was a 7th year Ravenclaw halfblood, and lost her sister.
Kathleen fought in the Ravenclaw Tower using Expelliarmus, was a 6th year Hufflepuff muggleborn, and lost her cousin.
Matthew fought on the ground using Expecto Patronum, was a Gryffindor alumnus muggleborn, and lost his brother.
Steven fought in the Astronomy Tower using Stupefy, was a 6th year Gryffindor pureblood, and lost his best friend.

We're trying to vary the difficulty level between issues. The last few logic puzzles in The Quibbler have been going easier for a while. So this was meant to be distinctly tougher. A Battle to solve it, perhaps. wink.gif Which you won with flying colours. Raven flag.gif However, we won't aim for anything this difficult again in a hurry.

In Astronomy Tower, Steven a 6th year Gryffindor, used Stupefy, lost his friend and is a Pure-Blood.

How do you solve the logic puzzle? Do you use a standard grid to solve it or do you use other methods?
I guess that differs between persons. Of course you can construct a logigrid and use that to solve them, I know of at least one Quibblet who does this regularly. smile.gif

I, however, have never been a friend of the logigrid. I often find it at least as confusing looking at spread X's and -'s, as the original clues in text. So what I tend to do when I solve a logic riddle is to grab a pen and a lot of papers and note down what the clues tell me in some sort of short notation, and also matching all that can be matched just from the clues, as well as what possibilities are left after I've discarded any that were explicitly eliminated in the clues.

Then I tend to look at my paper and consider which of the "things" that should be matched that I know most about after this first match and elimination round. And so I take a different paper, or part of paper and write up all existing such, with what I know of them. Sometimes I get a few different such listings on the paper. As in one for example matches all I know for each name and the other all I know for each shoe size.

Also I tend to as quickly as it is practical revert the eliminations to the possibilities left. Let's say that I have five different shoe colours to match for each person and I know that Bert's shoes are neither black or green. Then that's the same as to say that his has any of the other three colours. Also I always print the clues on paper or copy them to a word document or something so I can mark a clue (or a part there of) as soon as I have made use of all it contains, so that for each time I re-read the clues and am able to match more things together, I get fewer clues to re-examine.

Having done that, more information from the logic riddle will be able to match up, or eliminate as possibilities and by repeating the procedure the answer will fall out eventually. If it doesn't, it means I have over looked a clue or interpreted something wrongly. And if I can't spot where the problem is, I generally put it aside for awhile and start over on some new pieces of paper. smile.gif

Was it this type of answer you were looking for, greatpetie83 or was it a more detailed guide on how such a thing work?

How do others go about it?

Posted by: greatpetie83 Jun 17 2009, 03:37 PM

Yes, that was something I was looking for because with this last logic puzzle you have 6 variables to match up which makes it a very big logigrid so that's why I wondered.
Maybe I'm going to try it the way you do it if I have some time.

Finished the crossword and I think the answer is descendio.
I'm affraid this isn't correct. To begin with there are (or should be!?!) 8 blue cells in the crossword, while the word you suggest have nine. Also, while some letters do match the correct solution smile.gif it's not true for all.

If you want help with the solution you could tell me which cells you find what letter in, and that will give me some idea of wich words you have wrong. Or you can simply ask for clues for some words if you already have a good hunch on where the problem lies?

Posted by: greatpetie83 Jun 22 2009, 05:45 AM

Yay, mentioned in the Quibbler again. Having another go, the solution to the rune puzzle:

House: Gryffindor

House traits: brave, chivalry and courage

3 witches: ginny, parvati, padma (actually ravenclaw, in movie gryffindor)

they are all: sisters

Posted by: Evreka Aug 2 2009, 03:14 AM

Congratulations, greatpetie83! thumbup.gif

As for the mistake you mention, I am very sorry. We caught that too late to fix it in the paper. sad.gif Originally, way back when this was first constructed, (before even presenting it to the rest of the Quibblets) the third name was 'Molly'. When I changed that, thinking it made the final part unnecessarily difficult - and also debatable as Molly isn't really a sister as much as she was - I forgot all about how I had phrased the witches tagline.

And in subsequent proof readings, I guess everyone has not payed enough attention to the taglines, just checked the puzzle itself. When we finally caught this, the paper had already been sent to the news agents of TLC. We will certainly look the puzzles through more closely from now on.

Posted by: greatpetie83 Aug 2 2009, 05:20 AM

I don't mind, but with Molly it could have been interesting, making it maybe a bit more difficult which is not a bad thing.

When you post a solution to a puzzle, we have a useful feature here called a 'spoiler tag'. It's a courtasy to anyone who has not yet solved it but happens to look at the thread. If you check your answer out now, you can see what it does. One of the LL moderators have been kind enough to hide your answer with it. This way those who haven't got the solution yet, but happens to look at the thread, can avoid seeing it. To read it you have to highlight the solution. You achieve this by typing

[_spoiler]logic reply[/_spoiler] (but without the underscore '_', replace '_spoiler' with 'spoiler' in the tags) which gives this result:

logic reply.

BewareoftheNargles, Hermy-one Pince, luvpink (and Bandersnatch) also solved the Logic Riddle correctly.

miche - you're posted solution to the crossword is mostly correct, with just two things amiss (whereof one probably is a mistype).

Down 12 (J-M) is a letter too long in your reply, the last 's' shouldn't be there. I assume a mistype in reprinting the solution here.

Down 1 (H-M), however, is wrong. But all the crossing words' letters are still correct, so you've had really bad luck in finding a different character that fits in the grid! ohmy.gif Check out the spoiler text below, by highlighting it with your mouse:

The correct answer is:

oops.gif Sorry! I'm glad to see you found it funny and that you and others seem to have been able to solve it anyway. Thanks for letting us know!

Finally, a word or two on spoiler tags:

To our newcommers: When you post a solution to a puzzle, we have a useful feature here called a 'spoiler tag'.

For some reason, Firefox users seems to be able to see "through" spoiler tags at the moment, so that's why you had to wait so long to get your solutions corrected.

Free Butterbeer to all who tried!

I think I've worked out the solution to Prankter's Logic in the October edition of the Quibbler.
The first to be sorted was a wizard.

I've got the crossword one in the blue boxes smile.gif

Horntail - as in Hungarian Horntail smile.gif

EDIT: This is for the October edition!

Solution to the rune puzzle

sickles
knuts
galleons

wizard money

gringotts
goblins
griphook
gobbledegook

Doing the sudoku later and thanks again for the great puzzles.

Did the sudoku and I think the answer is: magic

I think I've also solved the sudoku but as I haven't solved the cipher above I'll just describe the symbols.

The First is a coloured in diamond.
The second is a weird z that ends in a squiggly thing.
The third looks like the head of an ant i.e. a circle with two lines that look like antennae.
The fourth looks like an empty diamond with curved sides.
The fifth is basically just an x.

Prankster's Logic Puzzle in the October Quibbler:

Answer: the first to be Sorted was a wizard.

Explanation: Unless Hogwarts was accepting house-elves and trolls back in '89, the first to be Sorted was either a witch or a wizard. Since the twins make opposite claims about the initial Sortee's gender, one of the twins must be telling the truth. And since we are told that only one of the three pranksters tells the truth, Lee must certainly be lying. But if Lee lies when he says that George is lying, then in fact George must be telling the truth. So the first to be Sorted was, as George claims, a wizard.

Alternate Explanation: One can also simply consider each prankster as the lone truth-teller in turn -- in two cases, this leads to more than one person being truthful simultaneously, which is not allowed. To wit: if Fred tells the truth, then Lee would be lying when he says that George is lying, so George would in fact be telling the truth -- but that is impossible, since Fred and George can't both tell the truth. And if Lee is telling the truth when he says George is lying, then George would indeed be lying and the first to be Sorted would have been a witch -- but then Fred would be telling the truth in addition to Lee, so we have another impossibility. Therefore George must be the sole truth-teller, and a wizard was Sorted first. (In this case, Fred is lying since he claims the first-Sorted was a witch, and Lee is lying since he deceitfully claims that George is lying.)

ETA: Aha! Looking back at previous posts, I see that Fabian Prewett concurs! Cheers, FP!

Got the solutions to all puzzles, but to get into the Quibbler again is getting a bit to much. Maybe I should make a puzzle for the next Quibbler?

Rune Puzzle:
Ghosts:
Fat Friar
Professor Binns

Quote:
Troll in the dungeons, thought you ought to know
By
Professor Quirrel

Happened at Halloween:
Lily and James Potter murdered
Baby Harry orphaned
Death Day Party

Sudoku:
Ginny

Crossword:
Halloween, but with an extra e?

I apologize for my quickness, but have some time on my hands and enjoy the puzzles.

Huh? huh.gif What do you mean?

Congratulations greatpetie83! woohoo.gif A perfect score, indeed!

As for the crossword word, my appologies. There seems to indeed be one 'e' too many! Sorry about that!

So far we still have two puzzles unsolved (or at least not reported back here), though: "Where is Gilderoy Lockhart?" and the five differencies between the pumpkin images.

Posted by: greatpetie83 Nov 8 2009, 05:39 PM

I've been mentioned in several quibblers in a row for getting (mostly) the rune puzzle first. It's flattering, but even I think it's to much. That's what I mean.

Posted by: dracomalfoy4evah Nov 11 2009, 03:32 PM

My answer to the october spot the difference are: pumpkin stem, fang, one eye isn't grey and bag beside pumpkin is missing.

Posted by: Evreka Nov 11 2009, 06:27 PM

dracomalfoy4evah - that is indeed a very good start. However, there are five differences and you list four. Do you want a hint, or should you look some more on the images? smile.gif
