Why put DD in a slot? Why the need to label him as gay or straight?, He was a great wizard; isn't that enough?

Why does Dumbledore need to put in a "slot" He was a great "wizard". That should be enough. I have read book 7 three times and I did not get the idea that he was gay or straight. Everyone seems to think other people need to be put in "slots". Why is that?
