When I first read CoS, I didn't like it as much as PS. I was 11 when it came out, and had spent the previous year writing stories about what could happen in the next book, but for some reason it didn't 'get' to me as much as PS had :S it wasn't till I was about 14 that I really started to enjoy it. I think before that, I hadn't really understood totally the idea of the diary being such a major part of Voldemort, and the whole thing scared me a bit! I also didn't like the part about flying to Hogwarts in the car which for some reason made me feel guilty :s. I think too much of the book was about doing things you shouldn't and getting into trouble! There's some really good bits too though- the caricature of Lockhart is really funny, the final scenes in the Chamber are incredible, and the links to the sixth book especially are really interesting. I think reading it now, I get so much more out of it.

For some reason, this has been in the bottom two of my favourites. I absolutely adored PS/SS, and although I loved CoS, with the back story of the diary, and also loved the introduction of Lockhart - OK, he was a annoying character, but he was comical! - I have always felt there was some magic missing from this one. Maybe it was too many spiders? ponder.gif

It's strange because, I've never thought of CoS being in the bottom two of my favorites but, it possibly is, although it's very close to all my favorites (with HP it's all relative anyhows). I think what I most remember about reading CoS for the first time was the *previously in Harry Potter* thing at the beginning. And, I dont like the spiders blink.gif so, I totally hear Jane Marple there. Otherwise I love the book and its movie, I feel there is plenty magic and the story has a magical feel to it. It's not how I felt but, thinking about it I guess after SS (which I love, it's my equal first favorite book) CoS *is* less magical, it's more about detective work, adventure and a quest (and spiders) where as in SS a lot of purely magical things happen.
