~ Relationships Poll ~

There are innumerable relationships in the Potterverse, ranging from the friendship between Harry, Ron and Hermione to the bond between Fred and George; from the camaraderie between the Order members to the more serious one-on-one relationships like that of Snape and Dumbledore.

Each one is unique and has a place in the story at one point or other. But everyone will have their own ideas of what was the most vital relationship for the series. The one connection that stood out in terms of its depth and importance.
This poll is to ask you which one you would vote for. hbp.gif

The following are some relationships to choose from :
Feel free to mention those not given here in your post.

Snape ~ Lily * What would have happened if Lily and Snape hadn't been friends when they were children and Snape hadn't grown to love her ? Admittedly, it didn't stop him from joining Voldemort, but he did beg his master to spare her, leading to the sacrificial protection Harry got from his mother. It also led Snape to devote the rest of his life to fighting Voldemort.

James ~ Sirius * By all accounts, they were more like brothers than best friends. So secure were James and Lily about Sirius that they named him godfather for their son and were willing to entrust their lives to him and his judgement. What if James and Lily hadn't felt so about Sirius ? They would have accepted Dumbledore's offer to be their secret-keeper in the first place and Voldemort would never have found them.

Dumbledore ~ Snape * The relationship between these two wizards wasn't one of choice, but of happenstance. They were brought together by an impending tragedy and their relationship was sealed when it occurred. As time passed, their mutual respect and common mission cemented that relationship. Would Snape have turned around without Dumbledore's fighting words to him ?

Harry ~ Dumbledore * A sublime connection between a teenaged boy and a very old man. The level of trust that both of them had for each other was amazing, as was Harry's ability to understand and forgive the caring grandfather-ish figure in his life. Would Harry have given himself up to Voldemort in the forest if he hadn't trusted Dumbledore the way he did ?

Harry ~ Ron ~ Hermione * Their relationship was absolute in every sense. Friendship as Harry had never even dreamed of came his way after he entered the world he didn't know existed. The three were inseparable and shared danger, joy and sorrow as one. Would Harry have succeeded in his mission if it weren't for his best friends - Ron and Hermione ?

Harry ~ Voldemort * This was a relationship neither Harry nor Voldemort wanted, but they remained connected to each other from the moment Voldemort decided that Harry posed a threat to him to the day he finally met his end. They shared minds, souls and Lily's blood protection. But what if Voldemort hadn't thought of Harry as his mortal enemy ? He wouldn't have set out to kill Harry, and perhaps turned his attention to Neville.

Very good question!

I said Snape/Lily. It got the ball rolling, and kept it rolling. Without Snape's protection and information the plot would have changed dramatically! Harry would have probably died in book 1!

Harry, Ron, and Hermione. I would think that's pretty obvious. blink.gif

"I love you, Hermione," said Ron, sinking back in his chair, rubbing his eyes wearily.
Hermione turned faintly pink, but merely said, "Don't let Lavender hear you saying that."

I voted for Harry and Dumbledore but another important relationship that is often looked over is the relationship between Harry and Neville. Both had parents who loved them dearly and had to grow up without them. Although, Neville did have the opportunity of still see his parents, they could no longer truly be in his life. Had Snape heard the complete prophecy this whole thing could have gone either way and all of this would have fell on Neville's shoulders. And oddly enough the two became friends and dormroom mates. Also just being friends with Harry enabled Neville to grow out of his shell and live up to his full potential.

I voted for Snape's relationship with Lily, becuase if it weren't for this relationship the book would have never started. Harry would have died on the first night, because Voldemort would have killed Lily without giving her the chance to die for her son.

Great thread as each relationship brings something new. I doubt the books could have progressed the way they do if any one of those key relationships didn't exist.

But I'm going to have to choose Snape/Lily too. As people have already said without Snape's love for Lily he wouldn't have asked LV to spare her; which leads to Harry's death and LV continuing his power hungry siege for the wizarding world.
The books would effectively be non-existent in the form we know them if Snape didn't give a damn for Lily. I see no other Death Eater willing to ask such a favour as a life being spared. And even if they did, I doubt LV would grant it if said Death Eater wasn't one of his best followers.

Nice idea for a poll, rowena! flowers.gif

The obvious answer for me -- and ATM for the majority -- is the Trio. Without the combined powers of the three, the story would not have found a happy ending.

This said, I have to admit that I was tempted to vote for Harry-Voldemort. Yet I didn't, because -- call me narrow-minded if you want -- it was a relation Voldemort-Harry. Harry initially had no relation to Voldemort, at least not consciously, while LV actively went to hunt down what he felt was his nemesis.

I voted Snape-Dumbledore coz' without Snape Harry would have never gotten to the Battle of Hogwarts and survived it. And yes Snape only helped because of Lily, but without Dumbledore Snape's tragic love for Lily would just have made him a bitter, angry, I-hate-wizardkind person (which he did become). But because of Dumbledore Snape channeled all that negative energy into protecting Harry and fighting against Voldemort.

This was a really tough question.
I really like the Harry-Ron-Hermione -relationship best and that the relationship that makes me read these books over and over, but I think that Harry could have had other friends who would have helped him as much.

I think it LV and HP relationship because the book is all about Harry killing LV in the end. And if there was no connection between both of them, HP will just be an ordinary boy and maybe his life wouldn't be that interesting. wolf.gif

I voted for the Trio. I was torn though. I almost voted for Snape/Lily. Now that the series is finished I am looking back and can see the importance of this relationship to the story. But without the Trio the story would be so different. It is impossible to imagine Harry being friends with just Ron or Hermione. So many elements would have been missing. The three characters just balance each other.

Great poll, rowena biggrin.gif
