Dumbledore reveals that Harry could only speak Parseltongue because Harry was the seventh horcrux; he had some of Voldemorts soul in his, which gave him some of Voldemort's abilities. But, in the Deathly Hallows, Harry lets himself be killed, destroying the extra soul in him. Would this mean Harry couldn't talk to snakes anymore, or was this an ability that would always stay with you?

From the Bloomsbury Webchat (July 30, 2007)

"Nigel: Can Harry speak Parseltongue when he is no longer a horcrux?
J.K. Rowling: No, he loses the ability, and is very glad to do so."

Hope you're not too disappointed by this, hermione&felix-felicis. (Smile) But he's JK's creation and she decided he would lose his ability to speak to and understand snakes when the piece of Tom Riddle left him. So he has.

That rather makes sense to me. Harry Potter, whole and with only his own soul, wouldn't be able to have that ability that Slytherin's descendants do. Would he?

On the other hand, IF you do not like the answer the creator of the Potterverse gave to your question, there's always fanfiction, isn't there? (Big grin) Maybe you could write a little story where Harry never loses this talent even when Tom's soul piece leaves him. It wouldn't be fact (ie - fiction fact), but it might be a fun creative exercise for you.

It disappeared with the horcrux inside him.

Seeing as how the question has been answered, this thread will now be closed.
