Trevor has always been there, since the very begining. He's been mentioned (I believe) in every book, no matter how many times he runs away. But there was no mention of him at all in the seventh. So, where did he go? Did Neville set him free, did he die, regular garden toads don't live too long. Or was Trevor something special? What do you think?

i always thought Neville sort of "replaced" Trevor with his Mimbulus mimbletonia.

Thats interesting - you don't hear much about Trevor in the latter of the books.
Maybe he died? Neville did get more into Herbology so he could've just replaced Trevor. This is an unanswerable question - you'd have to ask JK ;) However, you don't hear anything about Neville in the last book, simply because they're out of Hogwarts for the most of it! i always thought Neville sort of "replaced" Trevor with his Mimbulus mimbletonia. No they overlap, because Trevor is in the scene where Neville demonstrates the defense mechanism of the Mimbulus mimbletonia - Harry is holding Trevor which is why he couldn't shield himself.

Oh, yes. I'd forgotten that small detail. In that case, he wasn't that important anyway, well it appears so, so maybe JK just felt like leaving him out?

There was a lot of speculation about Trevor's "true identity" before book 7 came out, many theories that he was an animagus and who he might be in his human form. I think JKR probably used him as a red herring to get us all guessing about him, whether she intended it or not that's certainly what happened, and by book 7 he was no longer needed. Also we didn't really see Neville in relaxed periods or lessons when he might have had Trevor with him, so I think he was simply no longer needed to provide intrigue and played no part in the activities of Neville that we saw.

I always thought that Trevor was Neville's familiar, thank you!

The thought of Trevor ever being an animagus never crossed my mind - so I must've missed the red herring there but its very clever of JK to have used it.

Especially after we all found out about Scabbers being an animagus, there was that speculation about Trevor. Before Book Three I think readers saw him as just Neville's pet. Then some readers' wonderful speculative imagination ran wild. (Well, who would ever guess that a rat was ...? Grin) Other readers, such as myself (with undoubtedly a much less developed creative imagination), never assumed or even entertained the thought that Trevor was an illegal animagus. It would have been overkill, I think. Jo already had three of the Marauders and Rita Skeeter in that role. I do think the amphibian played a role in the books, though. Both as comic relief - right from the train ride in PS - and as a way of reinforcing why Neville was so afraid of Snape; when Snape threatened to poison Trevor (boo, hiss). In a BBC interview on July 20, 2007, Jo confirmed that Trevor the toad was "just a toad". I still like him though. (Smile) Now that this topic has been raised, I kind of wish there could have been a line or two in HBP where Longbottom says that he left Trevor with his Gran or set him free or whatever, instead of taking him to Hogwarts for sixth year, because Neville feels he's too old to have a toad as a pet. Or maybe Neville could have mentioned in passing that beloved Trevor died of old age between fifth and sixth years. Just as a kind of tribute to the little guy. (wistful smile) Laura "It would have been humanly impossible to answer every single question that fans have. Because I am dealing with a level of obsession in some of my fans that will not rest until they know the middle names of Harry's great-great-grandparents." - JKR (NBC Dateline, July 29, 2007) -------------------- |
